Back in Feb I posted something over the line and got a warning for it. I understood the reasoning and take my medicine. I just learned about the infractions tab and there is the warning. However I noticed that is says it never expires. I’m confused. I know that about 10 years ago I got a warning about something else. It is not listed (so maybe I’m shooting myself in the foot). Did the old warning “expire”? Did the rules concerning warnings change? Please clarify the situation. Thanks in advance.
Addendum: not having a good day, please change title to “statute of limitations”.
I just reread the rules so I see it is permanent.
I assume this rule changed since I first joined since I know I was warned (at least 10 years ago) about a different thing and it is not listed.
I assume warnings used to expire.
Please don’t fix the title.
And immortalize my terrible typing? Have mercy!
No, they’re still on your permanent record. But the software that automatically tracks them was only implemented 10 years ago or so. So warnings before that are just carved in stone somewhere.
Is there a way I can learn how many “invisible” warnings I’ve received? I only remember the one, but there may have been others.
I don’t think they “officially” expire, but IIRC they tend to count less and less the older they are when the mods are considering whether to Ban or suspend you. IANAM.
Ten years ago? I don’t think you have much to worry about.
Guy joins a monastery, where they have a vow of silence. You can only say two words every ten years.
Ten years go by, the time comes up, and the guy says to his abbot “Food’s bad.”
Ten more years, the next time comes up, and the guy says “Beds hard.”
Ten more years go by, and the guy says to the abbot “I quit.”
“Well, I’m not surprised” says the abbot. “Ever since you got here, it’s been bitch, bitch, bitch.”

Shodan
Where is this infractions tab of which you speak?
Email the mods and they’ll tell you what archival warnings you have.
If you haven’t received a warning since they started using it, you won’t have one visible to you. If you have, it’s underneath the Subscribed threads in your CP.
PM a mod.
A search of the old manual threads for your username didn’t reveal anything. But maybe a mod spelled your name wrong in writing it down (which is one reason we switched to an automatic system). Only warnings since about September 2009 will show up in the automatic system.
As has been said, warnings don’t exactly expire, but they do become very stale. If you had a single warning from more than 10 years ago you can pretty much assume it is a dead letter.
The Statue of Limitations, soon to replace the Statue of Liberty in New York Harbor.
Thank Og, because I seem to be racking one up every 9 years!
So, you admit that you have a pattern the mods should be watching out for?
I think we should treat it kind of like yellow cards in World Cup soccer. If you can behave yourself for a certain number of years without getting a new warning, then your old warnings can expire.
Huh, I noticed recently that my warnings disappeared so I assumed they did expire.
Actually, the infraction system does allow us to issue red or yellow cards with different penalties, but we don’t make a distinction here. We don’t issue anything for a moderator note, which the system would call a yellow card or warning. The system calls red cards infractions, which is what we call warnings. (The terminology was developed before the automatic system, and we’ve always felt it would be too confusing to change it at this point).
I don’t know what you’re looking at, but I assure you they are still there and haven’t expired.
