The only food I’ve eaten in the last two days was two bites of fried calamari and a nutri grain bar. I’m pretty sure the calamari made me sick, because I had the same symptoms the last two times I’ve had a bite of it in the last 6 months.
So I tasted the calamari at work to teach my lunch cooks how to cook it correctly, then 3 hours later, I threw up and had to go home. I drank a little bit of water and slept the whole night. I drank a bit more water in the morning, left for work, and threw up twice. So I missed work, came home and slept a bunch more. I woke up a few hours ago, drank some more water, because I am sure I need it, and ate a nutri grain bar, because I’m sure my body needs something in it.
But now, I can’t tell if I am still sick, or if I am just starving. My stomach feels achey, but I can’t tell the difference. I can’t miss work again, so if I eat something and get sick again, I’m screwed! (or rather, the people covering for me are screwed). So, should I eat? or should I stay off food until tomorrow?
You need soda crackers or toast or rice, like Cat Whisperer said. I had [del]gastrointe[/del] [del]gastro[/del] stomach flu last year and I thought I would never eat again but really I didn’t start to feel better until I put some Saltines down my gullet.
And if you are puking you need a whole bottle of Gatorade not “a little bit of water.” Replenish!
I am fond of BRATT myself. When the byetta was thrashing my ability to eat at one point I had extreme nausea for about a week and I weaned myself back onto food starting with the BRATT diet.
I find a jacket (baked) potato, eaten slowly with just a little butter, is the best thing to have coming off a sickness-induced fast. And yes, that sick feeling could well be your hunger so try to eat a little plain toast or crackers and give your tum a few minutes to react.
BRAT/BRATT isn’t good over the long run, but it’s better than nothing at all. Sometimes I make the rice with half water and half chicken broth (low sodium, almost fat free) and that improves the flavor somewhat. Also, mashed potatoes made with chicken broth, without butter or milk or any seasonings might be something to try.
And I’d avoid any and all calamari in the future. Well, I’d avoid it in any case, but if you keep getting sick after eating a certain food, then you should probably avoid that food.
