For me the thread’s an interesting read/view if nothing else for identifying who has the balls (yes, bad pun intended) to actually post a pic. It takes a lot of courage to be nekkid for all to see.
I don’t find it creepy so much as “OMG, who in the world would want to see anybody here naked?!”
It’s not like Dopers are known for being especially fit or attractive in general. If I’m looking at naked just to look at naked, it has to be hot.
See, that’s the kind of picture that I would like to see in that thread - how more naked could you be than very sick and hairless for all the world to see? I don’t know about artistic, but I think it would be very moving and powerful. I don’t think Dopers would make cracks about how you look naked, knowing it was a chemo shot.
How about starting a thread for powerful, evocative photos of Dopers that may or may not be naked? 
I never come to the pit, but I just had to see this. I’ve never ever seen a thread that actually made me “LOL” until now. I made the mistake of clicking on Doc’s picture and could not believe what I saw. Ok, dressing up in Monk’s garb… strike one. Trying to look serious about it while holding a staff (the theatrical kind)… strike two. With a raging hard on… strikes 3 through 1, 847. Sorry, but that really makes me reconsider what kind of a crowd I’m hanging out with. I’m also now really concerned about how to erase my history so I never have to see something like that again. And, did you horney guys really expect that the Doper girls would suddenly be running around naked for your pleasure? I see there are lots of guys willing to show their stuff, and none of the female side joining in. Vote… creepy and then some.
I find that thread somewhere between ‘embarrassing’ and ‘amusing’ in that sort of point and laugh sort of way.
In whatever case, I’m all for it because it’s that sort of stuff that makes the SDMB more interesting.

I don’t know if it’s creepy, but the picture in the OP of that thread was funny as fuck. It had a whole Spinal Tap-like quality about it, and combined with the apparently unironic insistence that this was the result of an artistic “vision” just made it even funnier. “Treading water in a sea of retarded sexuality and bad poetry” comes to mind.
I’m sorry, I can’t fault a man for trying, but I try to call 'em like I see 'em. Maybe I’m just nitpicking.

Apart from that…hmmm…I don’t really have an opinion. I’m very surprised it was allowed. I would be annoyed if it eventually led the SDMB to have a lot of porn-related stuff posted on it. There are a bazillion better sites for that, and more importantly, I would be afraid that the overall quality of posters would suffer. I’m not sure I’d like the Straightdope to attract a lot of people interest in showing or seeing dicks.
I would probably like “artistic nude” threads because I suspect there must be some good photographers here. Actually, when I think of it, I’d probably like “artistic pictures not depicting a kitten” threads.
I will certainly click on “NSFW” pictures of female dopers if I randomly notice them, I probably won’t seek them. I’m not going to post any of me.
I don’t really find it creepy because…well…it’s not like it’s a surprising novelty on the internet, is it? And Dopers are regular humans, so it’s not like nobody would have ever suspected that there could be dopers who like showing their dicks, isn’t it?
All in all, I don’t care, as long as it doesn’t change the SDMB for the worst.
Meh. It’s something different. I enjoy the human body and have no problem with people displaying theirs. (I don’t plan to participate myself, I have some issues with my body right now and don’t plan to show it off for the world)

On second thought : I agree with the idea of allowing NSFW links on the SDMB. There could be instances when linking to such pictures would be interesting.
I guess I just don’t understand the big deal about nudity. And I guess it’s good that I could provide others with laughs.
I don’t understand how people can be bothered by threads they never have to open. Where is the fucking harm?!
Anyway, I’m upset that the thread has turned into a complete sausage fest. 
While most here have never posted pictures, those who do tend to be on the attractive side. (This is self-fulfilling; those who find themselves attractive tend to be attractive to other people, while those who do not … well, we never get the other half of those data points.)
And as for those disappointed that there are no nude females: Do the women in your life A) hang out on a message board on the weekends and B) happen to have a nude shot lying around that they’d broken-link to just for the hell of it?
And aankh, I’d suggest that from the response I linked to (I didn’t want to have to quote that material), what’s being used for sexual pleasure there isn’t a picture but responses. That’s pornographic, but textually, not pictorially. So the thread is pornographic, just not in the way it was (one so, so, so, SO hopes, because otherwise that’s fucking foul) intended.
And really, if you or anyone else didn’t want to be on a place on the Internet where there’s porn (as there is in every picture thread, not just the ones with full-on genitalia), I’d suggest going to a place meant for kids. I don’t mean that as an insult, but we’ve had revealing picture threads since at least June 2000.
And one person’s modest shot is another’s … well, you can fill in the blank there, I think.
