This thread falls firmly and squarely into the category of “if you don’t like it, don’t read it”. I genuinely do not understand the need some people have on this board to be offended by threads that they have no intention of participating in. Do you see me moaning about the diarrhoea stream of Palin threads? In fact I’ll take the nudist beach analogy a step further - it’s like complaining there’s a strip bar in a secluded building on the other side of town that you have to be ID checked to go in whilst being warned what you’re getting into.
If pictures of my body/dick (or even the prospect of it being viewable) upset anyone then tough shit, quite frankly. I had several reasons for wanting to particpate in it, one being that I thought the thread was quite a novel one and wanted to be part of it and two that it’s taken quite a lot of work for me to be psychologically and physically happy sharing pics of me nude. At the start of this year I was the best part of two stone heavier and not feeling very good about the way I looked, and the NSFW thread has inadvertantly given me a way to demonstrate what I’ve achieved. Also I’m just not bothered about nudity, I’ve been naked in lots of settings and it just doesn’t phase me - I don’t see the human body as something to be ashamed of. Last but not least there’s no way I’m showing a pic of my flacid penis (which resembles a prawn) without also showing one of me erect to show that I’m not actually hung like a hamster.
Personally I don’t get why that thread was any different to people sharing anything else about them that is personal, including works of art, poetry/writing, details of their academic or professional accomplishments or even just regular pics of themselves. If this makes me an attention whore then fine, I’m an attention whore.
As for the wails of “But we’re supposed to be fighting ignorance here - this place is supposed to be better than the rest of the internet!!!” I’d second what Sleeps with Butterflies said, namely get over yourselves. As much as I love the Dope it’s this attitude that makes me wish it would get off its own pedestal.

The only things new about that picture thread this time around is that the pictures are prelabeled NSFW and that there aren’t as many pictures per post as there usually are (for obvious reasons).
And the next time we have a picture thread, which will likely end up involving something meant to excite someone else, will you be participating in a thread like this?
And having that here predates you, so maybe you should basically get used to it or go somewhere else. You might as well be complaining about the existence of a SDMB forum that’s been around for the last eight years; we’ve gotten along just fine with them so far, a few kerfluffles notwithstanding, and if nothing else, they tell us who reacts to things in an acceptable manner (e.g., leaving at least something to the imagination somewhere) and who tells us more than we need to know about his (in this case) reaction to other people’s looking at his penis.

For me, it’s more than that.
This is a place where we can talk candidly about most anything. And while some of those anythings upset some people (and I sure ain’t in love with reading someone saying, effectively, “I may masturbate to this later on”), that thread was fighting the notion that we should uphold the idea that bodies are not for public viewing consumption.
And if we shouldn’t view naked bodies, then talking about the strange things our bodies do, or secrete, often using a hell of a lot more thought and time than it takes to do a revealing photo, should be right out.
If the NSFW thread had been an opt-out thing, I’d understand the concern. But any system where you have to click at least twice, then edit something, all of this on purpose, and you already have a pretty good idea of what you’re in for, … really, if that’s foremost on your mind on the list of things to complain about, your day must have gone pretty well.
This board has had multiple threads devoted to the stuff coming out of out bodies and on our bodies. In my time on the dope I have seen graphic (and fascinating) pictures of one doper’s skin cancer surgery over time, graphic descriptions of all manner of pus volcanoes, pimples, boils, carbuncles, infections of various types, dopers trapped in public bathrooms by simultaneous fecal and vomit explosions that required industrial cleaning equipment to tackle, and finally discussions about the whys and wherefores of “chunky” menses that look like ‘slippery clots’.
And yet… a few dopers show their dingles (which you have to work to see) and we have apparently lost our ethical and aesthetic compass as a board.

Years ago when Drive In Theatres were popular, there was a joke/urban ledgend about a woman who phoned a local TV station to complain abouthow she could see “pornographic” images from her kitchen window that were being shown at the local Drive in.

The “nude Pic” thread reminds me of that. If you don’t want to go through the work of looking, then don’t. The fact that some people want to do something like that has little or no real effect on you in the operational context.

I know opening any thread in the pit invites people to turn the thread around on you.
But yesterday I was sitting around by myself at work, bored, thinking. Saw the NSFW thread. Thought, “wow, really?” Then read through it as the post count grew, saw that some people were actually posting links. Thought “wow, really?” Didn’t feel any real curiosity to look at the photos, because I’ve seen plenty of naked people I don’t find attractive on accident on the internet, don’t wanna see it on purpose really. But no big deal. Wondered if anyone else was thinking “wow, really?” But it’s not gross. I’m not offended. I just never expected The Straight Dope Message Board to be the place for this to happen. It didn’t seem like an “appropriate” place for it to happen - NOT because it’s disgusting, NOT because I’m a prude, but it just seemed OUT OF PLACE. Specifically because there are way more places for nude photo posting than there are for the type of conversation typical to this message board - varied, usually intelligent, devoid of spam, etc.
When I said in my OP that it was nice to find one place without porn - is because it fucking was! It does not make me a prude to be slightly exasperated that every goddamn website that isn’t for children only eventually ends up with naked people on it. Is that all we are, as humans?
