Am I the only person in the world who hates Spongebob?

That’s been my observation.

Can you totally hate a show that’s had as guests such luminaries as Pantera, Lux Interior, David Bowie, R. Lee Ermey and 3 of the 4 Young Ones???

No.

Nope, I do too. And I’m amused that I speculated here on the boards that watching Sponge Bob causes brain damage years before a study claims it really does.

I had never watched the show, but a couple of weeks ago, my nephew’s family was visiting and his two little boys turned the show on. The repeated shouting of the same word over and over again was wayyyyy annoying.

I liked Spongebob, back in the day, but I watched it mainly in Spanish (¡Bob Esponja!) which may have contributed to the experience.

Of course it doesn’t compare to Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends or the Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy.

The first 3 seasons and the movie are excellent. Unfortunately, Nick decided to uncancel it after the movie and it noticeably went downhill under the new staff, especially in the fifth season, when it started relying on gross-out toilet humor. I’m cautiously optimistic about the new movie coming out next year, as at one point there was talk of bringing back some of the original writers.

Plus Ernest Borgnine and Tim Conway as Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy.

Definitely not.

I hate it. The cross between the manic characters/pace and the ugly depressing music and animation just grates on me.

Moving over to Cafe Society.

That would have made her 23 when the show first aired. That’s even past the “stoned college student” demographic.

I liked it back then, but I was 14. I don’t know if I grew out of it or the quality declined or both.

I haven’t seen it in years, but loved watching it with my kids. Phineas and Ferb and a cartoon called 6teen were also favourites.

Sponge Bob was really funny back in the day.

You people need to grasp a sense of humour!

The character is annoying, but he’s supposed to be. A large part of the humor of the show is watching the more “normal” characters (mainly Squidward, but sometimes Mr. Krabs or Mrs. Puff instead) deal with someone who’s so annoying yet so well-meaning by nature.

If I had a guy like that living near me, I’d definitely be a Squidward type.

The show was absolutely brilliant in the first three seasons, and occasionally so in season four. Since then, it’s pretty much been just a kiddy cartoon with an annoying main character, which is much less enjoyable.

I liked it before the movie and then it wasn’t as good.

I was 9 when the show first aired so that’s probably a factor

No, you’re not alone. My wife hates SpongeBob. She also hates Giada De Laurentiis. (I don’t know if they’re related.) I like to put them on the television and then leave the room.

He is a waste of yellow paint & airtime.

I am 41 and I have loved SpongeBob ever since I was in my 20’s. I watch it sometimes even when there are no kids around and I went to the movie in the theater. As stated, he is supposed to be annoying but it is a well-written and funny show. Maybe it will work better for you once you know that it is a commentary on nuclear weapons (or maybe not). It takes place off of of the Bikini atoll where the U.S. really did some nuclear testing back in the day. The theory goes that Bikini Bottom got the way because the radiation poisoning from the nuclear testing turned the sea creatures there into a bunch of mutants. You can hardly fault SpongeBob himself for that.

In the circles I run in, it is Caillou and Max and Ruby that inspire near violence in the parents including me. Many kids love those shows for some inexplicable reason but they are like Chinese water torture to adults. I don’t want to point fingers but it is a fact that both are those shows are Canadian. I don’t know if they even watch them at all in Canada or if they are just cultural weapons produced specifically to drive American parents insane in that passive aggressive kind of way.

I can take him or leave him but I find bits like this absolutely hilarious.

I dunno, I think this is still hilarious.

Good analysis.

I tend to love Unnaturally Cheerful characters: Ed Grimley; Augustus in I, Claudius; Agent Cooper in Twin Peaks; Walter Bishop in Fringe; Miranda in the eponymous BBC series. So of course I’m a fan of Spongebob.

I loved the first few seasons and movie, but for schedule-change reasons haven’t seen the newer seasons. From what people are saying, it wouldn’t be worth the investment of viewing time.
