There was a Mythbusters episode in the latest season where they crash two cars at 50 mph and at 100 mph and it was very obvious that cars simply aren’t made to handle accidents at 100 mph. Getting hit straight-on – which is probably the safest way to hit something – you’re still going to have the engine block smash through your chest.
Gee, that concrete abutment the vehicle slammed into sure seemed to fare pretty well… nary a discernable scratch.
I was visiting with a Sheriffs Deputy at the car wash the other day discussing preferred vehicles, departments, etc. and he mentioned that not only does his in dash camera come on automatically whenever he hits his lights or accelerates to a specific speed but that it preserves a 20 second loop of what happened prior to the start. Looks like this clip is direct evidence of that as the officer gave no indication he knew what was unfolding before the vehicle flew past him on the left.
I’d much prefer to have seen him try to shift into reverse.
He probably started to apply the brakes before he hit the barrier; he was going fast enough that while the signal was traveling brain-to-foot he traveled too far for it to be useful.
It’s pretty rare that I say I’m sorry to see that someone lived through a car crash. At least the stupid shit didn’t kill someone else, even though he easily could have.
Yes, I’ve been on that road a few times, and it’s usually busier than that. In addition, the way he was driving, he could easily have crossed over the median and hit several cars coming the other way.
