Amazing Race 1/13/08 - "Sorry Guys, I'm Not Happy to See You"

Obviously I’m not implying that the bunching itself was a fluke. I’m sure that was planned. But the idea that the producers would somehow change the venue less than a day before a leg began for the sole purpose of sponging away a 3-hour lead against a particular team is ridiculous. This is all planned WAY in advance…it was definitely not done to favor TK & Rachel. The fluke was that it was TK & Rachel who would benefit from it, not that it happened.

I’m late to the party, as usual. I just watched it this morning.
All I have to say is, “YAY! The shrill harpy is gone!”
I just can’t get over her attitude that they’re somehow working harder than all the other teams, and that the other teams are just skating along on luck.

And their comment about Thai food in Taiwan… haven’t other teams made the same comment in past races?
::: Looks at TAR Knowledge Gods rockle and jayjay :::

I honestly don’t remember. I don’t think they’ve ever been to Taiwan before, though, which limits the likelihood of that comment being said.

In the first episode didn’t they have to ride a bike over a big gorge?

I’m no fan of that couple, but wasn’t it pretty obvious that the line was scripted? It certainly wasn’t off the cuff.

I did enjoy that ending quite a bit. I actually yelled out Yay! when Nic & Don hit the mat.

I wasn’t saying they changed the venue. Certainly, everything else, venues, permits, etc, has to be set up ahead of time. The only thing that would have to be changed would be the start time.

But the start time at the Floating Garden IS actually 10AM, as shown by the link I posted. There was no producer chicanery involved in that.

I mean the start time for the contestants leaving the mat.

But they always leave 12 or 36 hours after they arrive, I have never seen an exception to this.

I was thinking that we had seen them fudge with this before. I am entirely willing to admit I am wrong, but it just seems to me that the leaving time is one of the few things completely in their control and manipulating that would be a very simple way of creating a bunching point, or not.

Actually, non-standard pit stops have become increasingly common, though it’s never specified directly. The most recent example was the leg ending in Burkina Faso, when all teams arrived at the pit stop during mid-afternoon but didn’t leave until between 7:58 and 10:07 a.m. the following morning.

The way you can tell a non-standard Pit Stop is whenever Phil announces the departure times but does NOT say specifically when they arrived on the previous leg. This was particularly obvious during the Family Edition, when nearly every episode involved a mid-afternoon arrival followed by an early morning (post-dawn) start.

Howzabout the infamous Irish Bicycle-On-a-Wire-across-the-freakin’-Sea (of Doom)?

In the last race, someone on each team got dropped 700 feet on a cable from a tower in Macau. That bicycle on a wire ain’t even in the same ballpark.

Well, you’d think, wouldn’t you, that that would have been the last of Nate and Jen as a couple? Apparently not, according this interview. Also, I found it a little bit interesting that Nathan was in high school with TK, Rachel and Staella. Geez, the producers of the reality shows need to cast their nets a little bit wider.

I can’t believe everyone’s so happy that Nate and Jen are out. My first reaction when they lost was, “Well the rest of the race will be a lot less interesting without them constantly bitching at each other.” Don’t you all realize that you loved hating them? There’s really no one left to root against, which takes a lot of the spice out the of the competition, IMHO.

Back in the very first thread, before the episode was even over, I said

After the show was over, I said

But I don’t think I expected then that they had a chance. I like the other teams, and Ron has shown himself to be a bit of a prick, but I’d be happy to see him and Christina win.

Eh. “The rest of the race” consists of 1 more episode. I can live without them for that long.

Besides, that’s one week more that I can relax stress-free without a reality show contestant to hate. I have to save up my serenity. Jonny Fairplay is back in February, and we have a whole NEW houseful of hamsters coming when Big Brother comes back. Who knows how many of THOSE I won’t be able to stand?

No. I really didn’t.

I like watching teams I like doing neat tasks in neat places.

I didn’t love hating them. They just annoyed me, and I am glad to see them gone. I am looking forward to a Jen-free finale where I can be happy with any of the teams that win. I don’t immediately recall any teams on TAR that I have “enjoyed” disliking. Perhaps the Guidos on the All-Star Season would come the closest.

There have been a few “villains” on Survivor that I enjoyed their machinations, like Richard Hatch, Rob Cesternino or Jonathan who will be in the next Survivor again, but it was because they were also very smart “game theory” players. The Amazing Race doesn’t exactly lend itself to that.

My thoughts exactly. I hated the way they treated each other, their arrogant attitudes, their utter contempt for the other teams and really, really didn’t want them to win.

I’m fine with any of the three remaining teams winning; although I’d love for TK and Rachel to win. But, yeah… I don’t think they have a chance. I’m thinking Ron and Christina will win.
