Run the household that I live in? Does anybody honestly still think that way? What the heck, throwback to the mythical 50s anyone?

I disagree. This is the first season I’ve watched The Amazing Race and Nate and Jen weren’t one of the more attractive elements or the reason I’ve watching it. Frankly, I would have liked to see them and the blondes get knocked off during the first two episodes, rather than the pairs who did (Ari and Staella and the Anglican priest and deacon). Yes, Jen was a fine example of the sort of person I hope I never become, but watching them wasn’t pleasant. I’ll stick around for the scenery, the competition, and other forms of human and human-animal interaction.
The interview surprised me, by the way and not just because Nate’s actually foolish enough to continue putting up with Jen. It does account for why they decided to take the subway rather than a taxi. It also says how far behind Nick and Don they really were and mention their abominable luck with cabs. They did seem to do worse on that score than anyone else on the race, possibly because of something in the way they handled themselves?
Barbarian, reading that interview, I’ve now got a better idea of where the women in my hometown come from. It’s a scary thought.
That was my complaint in the very first thread this season – over half of the contestants came from or lived in Southern California. What’s up with that, seriously? TAR can’t afford to hold some auditions in Tulsa or Charlotte?
One of the best moments ever in TAR. I still kick myself for not getting the TWOP T-shirt that had that saying on it. sigh
This is the same thing that I was thinking. Not only on the teacup translation, but just in the ability to speak with the taxi drivers and ask about making trains. And let the driver know they were trying to make a certain train. Instead of just shouting “faster faster we’re in a race” at them. I didn’t like that the leg favored them quite this much. In fact having two legs back to back that favored them was a bit much.
I like how Jen couldn’t see that the reason TK and Rachel were able to race so well was because they didn’t stress out when things didn’t go exactly right. By keeping calm and being able to just handle the issue they avoid making stupid mistakes. And how petty are you to actually be mad at another team for trying to win? I think it was Rachel that said something like “She’s mad at us just because we’re racing”. Glad they’re gone.
Luck of the draw. There was no guarantee that the team would still be in the race by the time these legs, which I assume are set before casting is done, came up.
I am not sure what you can do about the language thing, honestly. I mean some folks are stronger, some are smarter, some know Spanish, some know Japanese. In a race around the world knowing a foreing language is a plus and it just reflects your better skill set at doing the race.
Also, how many times have we heard a team say something about what an advantage they’ll have on a particular leg because of some life experience, only to have that team blow up in most spectacular fashion?
Like the Schroeders in TAR:Family, thrilled the race was going through their hometown of New Orleans, who were eliminated when they couldn’t find a park 10 minutes away from where the father worked?
In the same episode that the Holy Harpy (F’in’ Weavers!) taught her children, on camera, that Pontchartrain was one of the Great Lakes…
Didn’t the Paolos get lost in Brooklyn during the same Race?
And on TAR-lite, Treasure Hunters, Team “Genius” went on at length about being from Philly and went all kinds of extra distance during the Philly leg.
Manhattan.
Oh, you mean like the Guidos, who mentioned every ten minutes how they lived in Paris for three years and yet spoke absolutely the worst French ever?
I almost included them in my post as the starting point of the phenomenon, but in looking at the chart for TAR 1 they finished second that leg.
Well, yes, but their French was still pretty bad.
