Amazing Race 4/17

I had a feeling it would be a non-elim (or a two parter) after seeing that Roadblock. That was pathetically easy and straightforward, and it didn’t really affect the order at all.

Really this episode came down to the detour and whether anyone got lost.

Well I *was *rooting for the Globetrotters until tonight.

I’m kind of surprised the cameras didn’t focus more on what he did. It was one of those blink and you’ll miss it moments.

What a selfish dick.

I guess I’m the only one not going crazy about a Globetrotter peeing. I bet the racers pee all over the damn place, it just so happens that the Amazing editors decided to show us this one time. Probably only because Kent and Vyxin walked past. Noticed how they barely reacted?

Presumably there was a WC in the library. Although, no one on this season needs to look far to see the consequences of an ill-timed stop to spend a penny. What is Rule #1?

I’m curious where Zev & Justin picked up all their time. After the eating task (was it even possible? Would have liked to see the Globies try it.), weren’t they fourth at the couch-moving task? I think they passed the Cowboys on the road, and the Gothettes and Trotters spent some time finding the clue in Salzburg.

Bad strategy from the Cowboys to pick a different flight. Yes, one plane-change is better than two, but they should have taken the same flight as everyone else. Once they’re on the ground, they could outrace the other teams, so it wouldn’t matter if the flight was late as long as all the other teams were late with them. It’s the teams that are slow at the tasks that need to take risks to gain an advantage.

When I rode the Riesenrad, I tried to quote Harry Lime’s famous speech as I was leaving.

That, or walk into the ballroom and bow & curtsy to your imaginary partner.

I actually didn’t mind that eating challenge as much as I usually do. It was nice, timed, not an insane amount of food. I’m still not a fan of eating challenges, but that one bothers me much less than the typical kind.

I love the cowboys, but they make some stupid, stupid decisions sometimes. At this leg of the race, you cannot be alone on a flight.

Wouldn’t a selfish dick keep everything to itself?

It seems like this dick was more into inappropriate sharing?

I was wondering if we would have any traditional NELs this season, or just the TBC legs. I guess this answers the question.

Taxi Assessment:

Stuck in the Desert and Officially Detained - or, Philiminated with extreme prejudice.
Amanda & Kris and Mel & Mike and Jaime & Cara and Margie & Luke and Ron & Christina - Already eliminated.

Flat Tire - or, not likely to get anywhere soon.
No one.

Stopping for Gas - or, not broken-down, exactly, but not a good sign.
Kent & Vyxsin (holding steady) - Kent & Vyxsin rate a surprising third place, in part because they were one of the teams who opted not to ride the Ferris wheel. But they’re also the only team that apparently didn’t know what the dolly was for (although I have to say that that couch must have been awfully light if Kent, of all people, could carry it a full mile and only feel the need to whine once every 150 feet or so). And Kent & Vyxsin seem to be the only team left that’s actively bickering. I have a hard time believing this team can make it to the final three.

"Rapido! Por Favor?" - or, making meaningless ineffectual comments from the back seat, but in no immediate danger.
Flight Time & Big Easy (holding steady) - Maybe I should bump the Globetrotters up–they were in the lead for a large portion of the leg, after a first-place finish last week. That’s great, but, considering the earlier portions of the Race, not yet consistent. Still, a well-run leg from them, and just bad luck that Zev & Justin came on strong in the end.
Gary & Mallory (down from “Cruisin’”) - A bad start to the leg for Gary & Mallory when they couldn’t figure out the message in the backup cam, and then doing both legs of the Detour sealed it. I guess there should be another TAR rule: when a Detour option is labelled “quick” or “easy,” it’s a lie. Anyway, Gary & Mallory get a NEL reprieve, but will have to do both Detour legs next week against pretty stiff competition. Lucky for them, there’s still a chance that Kent & Vyxsin will flame out, or the cowboys will take the wrong flight.

In the Passing Lane - or, ahead of the pack, but not quite comfortably.
Kisha & Jen (holding steady) - Kisha & Jen, once again never really in danger of elimination, but not competing for first place, either. They would have done better had they chosen the right Detour option initially, but two other tams can say that.
Zev & Justin (holding steady) - Zev & Justin land in first place despite doing both Detour options. I guess they must have had awesome driving and navigating skills–note that they passed the ultimate fifth-place team, Jet & Cord, on the way to the Roadblock, and wound up only slightly behind the Globetrotters. Note, however, that Zev was concerned about exactly what I mentioned last week: having to perform the Roadblock on his own. He did OK this episode (because, really, who could possibly screw up that Roadblock now thatRon is gone?), but he’ll still have to do a couple more in the future.
Jet & Cord (down from “Cruisin’”) - Generally, the cowboy’s logic in taking the flight with fewer connections is sound. However, once they realized that the rest of the teams were booked on the earlier flight, they really should have switched: the potential to be ahead of everyone else is worth a whole lot less than the risk of being behind everyone else. A bad move on the cowboy’s part, and once again they’re lucky the rest of the leg went well for them, and other people made mistakes.

Cruisin’ with Earl - or, drivin’ on the shoulder, takin’ shortcuts, and generally kickin’ butt.
No one.

[sub]Props to Mullinator and his Raj Rating[/sub]

I didn’t either. It was a large amount of food, but not insane. The difficulty was eating it in the time alloted. Moreover, it was a Detour option, not a required task, so teams could opt out and never even see the food.

“I could throw up so we can try again.”

Sentences like that (probably not word-for-word correct) must make a father proud.

It’s a Speed Bump, not a U-Turn. The extra task will be separate and different from the tasks everyone has to do. Judging from past Speed Bumps, they’ll have to sit down somewhere for five minutes.

You’re not the only one. While I think public urination is gross, I don’t see anything particularly disrespectful about peeing outside the national library, as opposed to some other location.

Yeah, it wasn’t ideal, but I’d rather someone pee in a public location than against the wall of someone’s house, y’know?

During the couch-carrying task I told my wife “Hey, that rug looks familiar.” She said, “What are you talking about? You’ve never been to Vienna.” I said “I know…”. After a few seconds the light bulb went on and she said, “Oh, is that your mouse pad?” (My mouse pad at work is a replica of Freud’s rug.)

I really need to start paying closer attention - or else DVRing so I can go back and watch again later. During the recap of last week’s episode, I realized that I had completely missed that the thing that Mallory was freaking out about on the river was people being cremated. I saw them going upriver, looking at the fire, the odd reaction on her face, but for whatever reason I didn’t hear it when Gary told her they were cremating people.

This week I completely missed the public urination by the Globetrotter. Blink and you miss it is right.

Must have been some sort of production hiccup that prevented Phil from doing it (hope it’s not a sign of trouble for the show!). I checked the latest video diary from Phil on cbs.com and it doesn’t mention any troubles in Vienna, but maybe the trouble will happen next week. But I would imagine there might be quite a bit of time between when the leg finishes and when they put together those teases, so maybe whatever happened was completely post-race!

There’s some speculation over at TWOP that that particular bit of production recording may have been done in the aftermath of the Christchurch earthquake, possibly when Phil wasn’t available due to going home and helping cleanup.

Just re-watched next week’s promos and while not sounding exactly like Phil, it stills sounded a lot like Phil. Maybe he had a cold, when he did the voice-over.

Almost certainly what happened. The voiceovers for the “next week” segments are probably one of the last things done, after the final edit was complete and such. Phil probably normally reads off a script from wherever he happens to be at that time. I remember an episode of Dirty Jobs showing Mike Rowe doing some of his VO work for another show under a blanket in the hotel they were at. But Phil was occupied elsewhere and I am sure the producers understood his priorities were elsewhere.

The Cowboys keep looking for ways to be eliminated. Normally a solid gamble to take the flight with less connections, but never when EVERYBODY else is on the same plane.

No matter how good the food was, nobody was going to finish that meal in 12 minutes. The cake looked way too rich, would have made it impossible to finish. Although, I would like to have seen if the Globetrotters could do it, bet they have put away some food in their time.

Trotters were disappointed to come in second this leg, but I was happy to see a team that could actually fit comfortably in a Ford Focus when the cars.

Count me as another who didn’t mind the food challenge this time, even if it was practically impossible to accomplish. The reasons I didn’t mind were: 1) It was optional; 2) It wasn’t gross - in fact it looked tasty; 3) It wasn’t a ginormous portion; 4) It only took 12 minutes plus travel time.

The Goths are really the only team left that I’d like to get rid of - I like Gary & Mal and was glad that they got saved by the NEL. I want to slap Kent so hard. Stop complaining!

Good point on the Christchurch earthquake. From Phil’s Diary, this leg happened in either November or December as Phil showed off the Christmas Markets in Vienna, so a post-production date of February doesn’t sound too far off.

When I saw Fight Times stance, I said, “That’s awful, he’s peeing on the library!”

My wifes response? “Do you think he’ll be pee-nalized?”
