American Idol 1/19-1/20

Is Brett the one who sang part of “Bohemian Rhapsody?” If so, then to each his own, because I thought he was the best from both days. He sang the melody beautifully, with no unnecessary embellishments or alterations (such as audible breaths, weird throat noises, or melismatic runs, all of which drive me crazy), and hit the modulation to the ending key on “as if nothing really matters” perfectly.

My husband and I were talking about how we couldn’t imagine allowing a fifteen-year-old child, no matter how talented, to audition for this show. These are freshmen and sophomores in high school!

God I wish.

It is a mess. I turn in the first few weeks to watch the really bad singers. There weren’t enough of them shown. They did let some pretty weak ones through though.

They did. Does the show pay their expenses to Hollywood, plane fare, hotel, etc.? Because that’s a lot of money wasted.

(I didn’t know until today that Steven Tyler is Liv Tyler’s dad.)

Girl! You are almost as old as me!

I think they pay for the hotel, but not the plane or any per diem. The advantage to that, though, is that you can leave L.A. when you like. If you get cut early, you can still hang around Hollywood, and since this happens in January, many people from northern states choose to do so. As far as money itself, friends/associates of hopefuls have taken up Get-Joe-To-American-Idol collections, so that’s one possibility. And IMHO, money spent to get to L.A. is not “wasted” by any means. :stuck_out_tongue:

Don’t feel bad, Steve didn’t know for a long time either.

Nor did she! She thought her dad was Todd Rundgren.

Here’s a question that bugged me coming off of this week – are these judges being too lenient, and how will that effect Hollywood Week?

I took the numbers that made it past the auditions for the past several seasons, and found they sent an average of 165 contestants to Hollywood. They send 51 on Wednesday and 37 on Thursday – if they keep up that pace, they’ll be sending 352 contestants to Hollywood this year. Are they going to have to toughen up as the auditions go on, or just suck it up and deal with it come the next round?

Looks like I’m in the minority, but man that show doesn’t work for me without Simon Cowell.

Still, he’ll be back later in the year with The X Factor, which is (in my opinion) a much better show than American Idol - assuming it doesn’t get changed too much from the UK format.

We were wondering that, too - one day they had 51 go through to Hollywood, right? I just figure they’ll be mowing them down in Hollywood like Granny at the street market.

They still need to find the ‘star’ to show off at the results show, like Reynaldo and Nathan.
No one has been weird enough yet.
