American Idol 1/23

You know what, I liked them. They weren’t fantastic and I don’t necessarily think either will make it out of H’wood, but it’s refreshing to see two people who at least have an inkling of what harmony is, as opposed to “duets” that are just singing the same melody an octave apart.

London has a total MILF.

(Dead) Daddy’s girl is alright, although I don’t understand how growing up next to the ocean is surreal if you’ve always lived there.

(Re: brother and sister pair)

I think I must be a sucker for harmony, because that was one of my favorite performances. Yeah, considering that I also groove on the group sing-alongs, I may be.

My son has just picked his favorite. The jet black haired girl with the bouncy boobies. She’s his favorite by far and he doesn’t understand why he didn’t get to see more of her (boobies).

I’m with Simon. I find her terribly annoying.

Well, like, if you’re going to be, like, all serious about and stuff…

Oh, they were fine. I liked them, and their harmony was decent. I agree that they probably won’t make it far though.

No more Black Velvet auditions.

Aretha? Got to see plenty more bouncing here…

Oh, I liked Black Velvet girl. Boo.

Aretha has a powerful voice but apparently she’s tone deaf.

Aretha needs to shut up. The showed a quick montage of a few that got tickets and there was a girl with a short pixie cut who was jumping out of her shirt.

Sweet! I can’t believe that they used a song from the TMBG kids’ album for a montage! (No) My three year old loves that song.

Meh. Nobody struck me as being all that great tonight. My favorite is still the Aussie dude.

I liked them too, a lot. Did they have two good voices, or two ordinary voices that sounded better together? I couldn’t tell.

I think they just pulled the harmony off pretty well. There’s a certain “ring” when two notes are in perfect harmony that make merely decent voices sound better than they really are. Good singers don’t always equal good harmonizers I think - when I was in choir, there were people who sounded awesome as solos but always threw harmonies off; on the other hand, there were also those who only sounded so-so on their own but carried the harmonies beautifully. Which is why I think the brother-sister pair won’t be able to go far - they sound lovely together, but I suspect they won’t sound as good seperately.

I think brother alone will sound a lot better than sister alone–he was sort of monopolizing their audition. They seem like they were raised and trained in choirs, not alone.

Yeah, he stood out. But that’s not saying much, considering what we’ve seen so far.

I used to think maybe Idol would uncover a spectacular talent, somebody who’ll be remembered 20-30 years from now. I need to lower my expectations and just enjoy watching these folks try to develop whatever talent they have. The process is fun to watch.

Aretha had me rolling. What a frickin’ bitch. She does have a powerful voice, but that doesn’t matter if you DON’T HIT THE NOTES!
