American Idol: 2/21

Careful there Wile E. I thought the same thing for the last two seasons and then was rudely disappointed in the following weeks. I think it’s just that finally getting to the real singing after all the audition drama, everyone sounds great! Then the flaws really start coming out, or the annoying personalities start showing and what a letdown.

I found myself thinking that way last night but I’m trying to keep my expectations a bit lower this season.

Did we ever find out if Nikko was the one doing the backflips in one of those collage segments?

Probably not. If he’s going so far as to change his name he must be trying individuate himself from his father.

Plus he’s probably been getting asked if he can do a back flip by everyone he’s met since he was like two. I’m sure he must hate that expectation.

I guess the TWOP rumors were wrong then.

Of course, the posters on TWOP think everybody is gay but with Constantine they at least had those drag pictures to fuel the fire.

I thought I saw Dezmond (“He did it better than James Brown!”) do a backflip once. I could be wrong, though.

The DC music teacher (Anwar?) definitely pings in the red on my gaydar.

Oh my god! And he works with children! </mock horror>

Really? I didn’t get that vibe at all.

Maybe wishful thinking on your part perhaps?

Bo was really great, but for the life of me, I cannot remember the song he did. help!

Drift Away

“Drift Away”
You know…
Give me the beat, boys
and free my soul
I wanna get lost in your rock 'n roll
and drift away

God. Thanks! It was bothering me all night.

Nope, he is so not my type. Jusat a certain something in his voice.

Dangnabitt! I missed it.

When I got to work everyone was talking about what a dick Simon was for dissing Scott’s singing. Seriously, everyone was talking about it. That Simon said he sounded terrible but he actually sounded like an angel. Those who vote voted for Scott just because Simon pissed them off so much.
And I missed it. I’m so disappointed.

Except that Simon didn’t say that. I still have it on DVR, and here is a complete transcription from when Simon (third of three) began his commentary:

Simon: It’s going to be interesting to see what the audience make [sic] of you. I, um, you know I said it when we first met. Um… [pause] you don’t look like an American idol. Um, but you know that. Um, but you have a nice voice…

Randy (talking over): What do you mean, though? C’mon…

Simon: Well, he doesn’t. You work for a record company. You know what I mean.

Randy: I mean, but…

Paula: (stutters, tries to interrupt, but is drowned out)

Randy: …did Reuben? Did Clay?

Simon (talking over): hmmm…?

Randy: Neither one of them looked like American idols either.

Simon: Well, we’ve put him this far. Glad you’re here. Um… it was…

Paula: (laughter)

Randy: (throws up hands, looks away)

Simon: …it was… it was… it was an okay… I mean, it was… it was… it was good. It wasn’t fantastic. Um… [pause] I think you can choose better songs than that. I don’t like the song either.

Paula: Song selection is key.

Randy: Yeah.

Simon: Yeah.

As others have noticed, the selection seems to be much better than the previous years. I mean, there was no one I heard last night that made me think, “How in the hell did THEY get in?”

Bo’s my man. Not only can he sing, his voice has a unique flavor that doesn’t scream Boy Band.

Nope, I didn’t like Anwar’s performance either.
I expected a better performance from Scott, I really liked Joseph’s performance (but he got hottie points from me, so I may be biased), I didn’t like Mario’s or Nikko’s performances at all.

I loved Bo’s performance! Absolutely and totally. I also think he’s better looking than Constantine, and not so whiny about being the “other rocker”. I have to agree that Constantine’s playing up to the camera was annoying.

And I second the comment about Anwar’s jacket, it was ugly!

Oops! I also meant to mention my favorite girls so far: Mikalah, Vonzell, and Carrie. Carrie is my favorite so far, I love the farm girl thing.

Time for a “drilling in ANWR” pun yet?

Did anyone else notice that Carrie never clapped for the male performers last night? Most, if not all, of the other women contestants clapped enthusiatically. Carrie was sitting prominently in the front row, never clapping. For me, it was a mark against her. Does she think she’s too good to support the other contestants? Maybe she needs to find out what a long walk it is off the stage when the applause is poor.

Not that I was looking especially hard, but all I noticed was the polite debutante clapping (rapidly tapping finger tips of right hand into palm of left hand).
