The favorites seemed to stumble this time. The blonde in the blue top did a great soul-countryish version, and I thought the last woman, Vonzell?, did well even thought they didn’t like her. Micaluh did well, sigh, guess she just shouldn’t be herself. The one with the latino name, Avila(?), was pretty good. The others…don’t really remember them except Janay who we’ll say good bye to this week or next. I’ll miss that deer-in-the-headlights look when she sings.
I wasn’t impressed with Nadia last week and even less this time, whoa whoa. She better pick an uptempo song next week, whoa whoa. She’ll last because the judges like her look, whoa whoa, and that must count for something–seems to overshadow her average voice, whoa whoa. And who is going to beat her, the others aren’t all that memorable. Were there just a bit too many whoa whoa’s in that song??
Carrie will be back, i still think she’s the best woman there.I guess she needs to stick to countryish stuff.
Last week the music was too loud and this week it was even worse. It’s so noticeable when the women sing, makes it a bit difficult to hear the voices. Even Simon mentioned it, and I seemed to agree with him all night long–scary.
I, too, was very underwhelmed with last night’s performances. My favorites so far—Aloha, Nadia, and Carrie—all gave disappointing performances. Mekkalekkahiemekkaheinieho didn’t impress me. Why doesn’t Simon ever tell her that her performances are “affected”? They are, IMO.
I actually liked Jessica’s performance, unlike most here. I liked Amanda, too. And Vonzell. I thought those were the three best last night.
Poor Janay, I think, will be going home. Celena too.
Do you know the song? It’s “My Love”, by Paul McCartney and [blaugh] Wings. Those are the lyrics—“Wo wo wo wo, wo wo wo wo, my love does it good”. I kid you not. IMHO, Nadia took a treacly song and made it almost sensual. So what if it didn’t show off her range, or whatever they were harping on? To me, she just proved that if she gets into the finals, and I hope she does, she can handle whatever lame theme night comes along.
I was halfway joshing you, but I still think the bar is pretty low if all you to do to be a genius is plod through a pop standard on national television. I do agree she picked the best song last night, just not the actual performance was all that remarkable.
I still think Fantasia did a pretty muddled version of Summerime, too. And I didn’t like Anwar’s Moon River at all. I guess we’re so impressed these kids have heard of that stuff that we give them a pass on the performance?
I didn’t think she did very well with it, even though the song is OK. In fact, I heard it before I saw it, and I was stunned to see that it was Nadia stinking it up out there. Tip of my hat for trying it, but of all the 70’s songs she would have knocked out of the ball park, that was an odd choice.
Been lurking on these AI threads forever, but I had to jump in & second the kudos to Mikayalahaha for God Bless This Child. Wish I could’ve heard it a little better, the acoustics seemed off. My favorite version of that song is by Blood, Sweat & Tears from about 30 years ago. I really liked the fact that she toned down her affectation significantly - for a kid, she’s pretty smart. Maybe some of it was just nerves?
Bo – yummmm! Liberal is exactly right, he disappears into the song. Like Fantasia did the first time she sang Summertime. The mark of an artist. And that voice. sigh We have a cat named Bo - any chance I could trade? He doesn’t sing, though, just throws up a lot.
Travis is too cute. Does he sing? Can’t say I noticed either way.
yellowval yes - Mario looks exactly like Jai’s younger (straight?) brother. I’ve been saying that for weeks.
Tom Jones did a terrific version of Hard to Handle. Smirk boy did not. He’s got weird lips. Buh-bye.
I hope Scott Savol sticks around for a while, it’ll be interesting to see what he does. At least he’s not just like everyone else (Celena, I’m talking about you soccer mom!).
And unless the song specifically includes “c’mon” in the lyrics, in writing, contestants should be immediately banned for saying it. As in, a big hook yanks them off the stage - Joseph’s goose should be cooked. Same with that “pulling you towards me” hand gesture that half of them do. Every time someone does that it makes me gag.
David sang Stevie Wonder’s “All in Love is Fair”, which has the potential to be a vocal showcase – David didn’t step up to the plate. The song is an exquisitely crafted portrait of sadness and regret; in the right hands, it can rip your heart out – again, David didn’t step up to the plate.
It may be beside the point now (so much Stevie Wonder already), but I’d love to see a Stevie Wonder theme night, with Stevie as a judge. It would be interesting to hear the opinion of a judge who couldn’t see the contestants.
Bob Dylan theme night would be a hoot. I’m going to go look through my Dylan and find a song for Bo.
Last night I had visions of Constantine tackling “Two Princes” for his next performance, thinking that early-to-mid-90s pop songs give him rock cred. He’d be all, marry him, marry me [the bad muthafucka].
Mikalahala has a decent voice, and showed it (finally) last night, dropping the shtick. But her phrasing, breathing, enunciation etc is so bizarre she’s completely unintelligible. How many syllables & breaths can you take singing the word “such”? If I didn’t already know the lyrics, I would’ve had no idea what she was singing.
What’s the name of the one with the dark hair, annoying voice, that looks and sounds like Barbara Streisand when she sings?
I hope, I pray she gets voted off tonight. I can’t stand her, and I don’t give a flying fig if the judges think she is good. She sucks!
Also, why do almost all of the female singers sound like the same person this year? I can’t decipher between them(except for Streisand-girl). It’s putting me to sleep.
My picks for the boot tonight:
David
Joseph
Celena
Jenay
I feel sorry for Jenay because she seems like a sweet kid, but every time she performs she has this “French girl performing in front of hooting German soldiers” look to her, as if she’s afraid at any moment she’ll be attacked by the audience. I think she has a good voice and a lot of potential, but her trepidation during her performances stifles her creativity.
And while I don’t like Mikaylah, I have to admit she knocked “God Bless the Child” out of the park this time around.
“God Bless the Child” was Billie Holiday’s exclusively from 1933 until 1957, when people started to cover it. Many wonderful singers have recorded their own versions, including Dinah Washington, Lou Rawls, Stevie Wonder and even Aretha Franklin. However, I suspect many people are finding it recognizable because one of its most popular versions was recorded by Blood Sweat & Tears in 1969, and was included on their Greatest Hits album in 1972 and then again on “Classic BST” in 1980. You can listen to a snippet of their version here, to see if you recognize it.
Not so. He even said during one of the audition shows this season that it’s his company that’s awarding the contract, and in fact, when there was a 2/2 tie when they had guest judges on, the tie always broke Simon’s way because his vote does, in fact, hold more weight than the others since it is his company that’s backing the winner.
Now that I’m home from work and have had a little time to digest last night’s show…
May I say that I’m overall underwhelmed by the females? As a group they’re nowhere in the same league as the men
Only Mikaela, Nadia, and Amanda have stuck in my mind – Mikaela of course for her rendition of “God Bless This Child” (which doesn’t excuse her mouthiness – I nearly applauded when Simon suggested she stay quiet more often); Nadia for attempting and conquering what I consider the most banal McCartney tune; Amanda for her energy and, well, turning the beat around. She was having pure fun up there, and it was contagious!
I like Jessica’s voice – I’m an avowed fan of pure, rich alto. I wouldn’t mind if she made it into the top 6.
I feel bad for Janay, but Simon was on target in saying that in 2-3 years she’ll truly be ready for AI. Her inexperience, unfortunately, has colored everything she’s performed thus far. I have the feeling that she’ll be one of the two voted out tonight.
Yes, I was probably 13 when it first came out. The ‘whoas’ just seemed to stand out more than the original, maybe because they only do (some of) the lyrics of the song in a shorter amount of time and that may have made it seem more noticeable. If you liked it, great, the rest here seemed to also. I thought it was average.
