American Idol 2/9-10

Crybaby waitress was real good.

Ah yes! Crying Waitress pulled herself together. I like her.

I didn’t recognize the song she did so I don’t know how to describe her.

How many single moms do we have to feel sorry for. I don’t understand why we’re supposed to root for them because they’re irresponsible enough not to use birth control. That lip ring is disgusting too.

I was just about to ask if they showed the Jim Morrison kid with the broken wrists, then they showed him in the recap. Glad he made it through.

Single Mom’s gotta brighten up those teeth. I am ambivalent about mothers leaving behind their kids to follow there stars. I can see why they’d think it would be good for the kid. I can also see how it could be really bad for the kid too.

Janelle

Edit, might not be her.

Her name is Janell Wheeler, I think.

That’s Janelle from Big Brother, I think.

She wore a white bra with a black knit shirt, she is not worthy.

Yeah, the gal I linked above apparently was on Big Brother but multiple pictures of her came up on a GIS for American Idol Janelle.

Andrew Garcia (neck tat guy) - does a funky version of “Straight Up” - I liked it! Singing was good, the funky version was great. Gonna keep my eye on this guy.

Vanessa Wolfe (hillbilly queen) - oh, honey. That was not good. Like Ellen said, her nerves made it awful - I recall her being better in the audition. I do hope she does make something of her life - she seems like a genuinely nice girl with no real opportunities.

Janelle Wheeler (pretty boring blonde) - she sings good. Boring, though.

Haeley Vaughn (pretty black girl) - ooh, pitchy. She was right next to good, though. 6/10

Mary Powers (rocker mom) - one note wonder? I didn’t love it. 6/10 for her, too. That better not be all these two have in the tank, or they’ll be done next round.

Jay Stone (beatbox boy) - he didn’t sing. Why didn’t he sing? Does he not get this? Bye beatbox boy.

Lilly Scott (purple haired girl) - I love what she has going on with her voice - that interesting warble or whatever it was.

Michael Lynche (expectant father) - Not bad. Not bad at all. I can listen to this guy.

Tim Urban (Florence Henderson-haired boy) - pitchy. Oh boy. Not good.

Justin Williams (cancer boy) - he can sing. I think I like him. Oh, they got those two wrong. Oh well.

Maddie Curtis (Down Syndrome sister) - strange song. I like her singing though. I thought she had some talent - maybe in a year or so.

Kasey James (barechest boy) - good. He can sing, he can play, and he’s not hard to look at, either.

Didi Benami (crying waitress) - yup, she can sing. Not great, but okay.

Crystal Bowersocks (ugly kid mom) - hey, did you know she’s a single mom? Good. Quite good. I’ll be interested to see more of her (but hear less about her kid).

I like Ryan’s concerned face. “Mm hmm, mm hmm, tell me more. Tell me more about how this was your big chance. It’s still really interesting to me.” Ellen really does have lovely eyes. She seems to be doing well as a judge.

I have to say there are four or five out of tonight’s show alone that I really liked. They’ve got a very diverse group going here - a lot who appear to have their own artistic voices.

Neck Tat guy reminded me a little of Cas Haley from America’s Got Talent. And that’s a good thing.

I think they did Vanessa Wolf a solid by sending her home. She’s a good enough singer to have made it through, but she’s wildly self-conscious and intimidated, has zero confidence and I’m afraid she’s not very smart, either. She’d get chewed to pieces by this show. She seems like a really nice girl with a lot of talent, but without the ability to take it very far due to her other limitations.

Blues Guitar Guy was my favorite - could really play, and I love his taste in music. Of course, how would he do when forced to sing a season full of the songs of Barry Manilow, and The Music of Disco, and all the other crap music he’ll be forced to play… "Tonight I’ve arranged my own blues version of “FunkyTown…”.

I just loved Lilly Scott, the girl who sang the Ella Fitzgerald song, Lullaby of Birdland. She’s got a great style.

Crystal Bowers has a great voice, and she seems to really feel the music. I like singers who are right into it.

It’s shaping up to be a fun season.

There are some interesting and refreshing ones this time around for sure. I really hope they make it into the top 24 at least.

I’m starting to see favorites also. When do they narrow it down to…whatever number they narrow it to?

How was Ellen?

Ellen was fine. She gave great advice, seemed sincere, and was quite funny. For example, one singer came out barefoot, and Ellen said something like, “Oh honey, you don’t want to go barefoot here. It’s way too dirty. Hollywood is a filthy, filthy town.”

She also yanked around the contestants amusingly. She asked one to step forward, then another. Then she had the first one step back. Then she had another one step forward. Then she asked one of them to move to the left. Then she asked the first girl to step forward again, then immediately step back. Then she said, “Oh, screw it. You’re all through to the next round.”

She looks like a good addition to the show. I wouldn’t even be surprised if she winds up being the most popular judge after Simon Cowell leaves.

I told my kids about a post of yours that cracked me up last week. After that, every time someone started up with a sob story, we’d all yell, “Fuck your grandma!”

I think we’re going to start doing that, too - so very, very sick of these so-called sob stories.

Pretty soon we can just change channel over to the Olympics and get a break from all of these contrived personal challenge mini-bios…
