American Idol 4/1-4/2 *Open spoilers*

Welcome back, Idol fans. It’s Dolly Parton week! I guess that means they’ll be singing all Dolly Parton songs? I’ll admit that I’m not too familiar with Dolly’s music. Let’s see … I know “I Will Always Love You,” “9 to 5,” and “Islands in the Stream.” Yep, that’s pretty much it. So there’s a pretty good chance I’m not going to like tonight very much. I am, however, going to have “Islands in the Stream” stuck in my head all day.

Did anyone watch the Today Show this morning? They were going to have a story about David Archuleta’s dad being a stage dad. I had to leave for work so I didn’t get to see it. Anyway, I was just curious. I had heard reports about his poor behavior when David was on “Star Search,” and that the jab Simon took at David last week about not believing he had chosen that song was aimed at his dad. If this stuff about his dad is true, I feel really bad for David. He’s a really talented and sweet kid.

I must have turned the Today show on late because I missed that. I would be curious to know what they had to say. I couldn’t find anything on the Today show website.

As for it being Dolly week, I think there are several people who could really have a very bad time this evening. IIRC, country week tends to be something of a train wreck. The really sad thing is this could easily be a really good week for Kristy. Bleh.

I was starting to like Chikezie and now he’s gone.
That’s all I have to say for the moment…

Here’s the video from the Today Show story:

Very sad. It serves only to increase my admiration for him.

Thank you for the link. I looked for the story on the NBC website but couldn’t find it. Ugh, poor kid. How long until he’s 18 and can do this thing on his own?

vivalostwages, I’m going to miss Chikezie too. I wonder what he would have done with Dolly Parton music?

I predict someone will do the White Stripe’s version of “Jolene”.

I’m not even sure how that’s a “version”. It’s just badly sung.

Just when I thought I had completely moved on, you say it’s Dolly week?! I’ll be watching.

Dolly night might be wonderful or it might be a nightmare. It could go wrong in one of three ways:

  1. They try to do “hip” covers of the songs, which will either be bizarre (previously mentioned White Stripes “Jolene”), or “Whitney Houston sings Dolly (i.e. I will always love you)”.

  2. They’ll only do the big cross-over hits:
    I WIll Always Love You
    Islands In The Stream
    9 to 5

Just do versions of other artist’s songs Dolly covered:
Peace Train
All I Have To Do Is Dream
Before The Next Teardrop falls
D-I-V-O-R-C-E
Help!

I do hope someone covers:
Hard Candy Christmas (Hopefully Brooke)
A Tender Lie (yes, I know it’s not a Dolly original, but beautiful)
Jolene (If it isn’t the aforementioned cover-which-shall-not-be-named) - this could, if actually done well, redeem Kristy Lee Cook somewhat.
Little Sparrow
Anything she did with Trio.

I am hoping that, on the results show, Dolly comes and sings her new single “Better Get To Living”.

Badly sung? Are you serious? That’s one of my favorite covers. White takes that song and makes it heart wrenching and frantic. It’s fantastic.

Love is Like A Butterfly
Jolene
Two Doors Down
Here You Come Again
9 to 5
I Will Always Love You
Islands in the Stream
Coat of Many Colors
Travelin’ Thru(the one that lost out on the Oscar this year)

These are the only Dolly Parton songs I can recall(other than the Christmas stuff). :o

I was hoping to start the thread so I could title it “Hello Dolly.”

I think her interactions with the contestants will be sweet. Dolly Parton has always seemed like a genuinely down-to-earth person to me.

Somebody will definitely try to be Whitney on “I Will Always Love You,” unless they’re smart. There’s no way you can pull that off, kids!

If the White Stripes did “Jolene,” then David “I’m Alternative Exactly The Way Other People Have Already Been Alternative In A Not Very Alternative But Very Safe And Proven Way” Cook is set.

Tonight’s song list according to Idol Thoughts website

David Cook: “You Know I Love You”
Kristy Lee Cook: “Two Doors Down”
Michael Johns: “Islands in the Stream”
Carly Smithson: “Jolene”
David Archuleta: “Travelin Thru”
Ramiele Malubay: "9 to 5 "
Brooke White: “Coat of Many Colors”
Syesha Mercado: “Eagle When She Flies”
Jason Castro: “I Will Always Love You”

I’m really, um, intrigued? by some of those choices.

Especially that last choice.

Then again, it is April Fool’s Day, as Ryan Seacrest just made painfully obvious.

So much for the spoilers.

Which is sad, because I really wanted to hear Castro do “I Will Always Love You.”

Solid. but I never liked the song and Brooke does nothing for me.

Brooke sounded much better in practice with Dolly than on stage. And don’t smile during Jolene!
