American Idol 4/15 and 4/16

Your link’s a bit messed up. Here ya go:

I think this is hilarious…everybody’s favorite Mariah Carey song is the one that wasn’t a Mariah Carey song.

My response to David Cook’s singing last night was, “Well, that was an okay performance for a placeholder week for him.” It kinda IS a stalker song; I was glad that he seemed to pick up on that.

My impersonation of David Cook finding out it was Mariah Carey week; “First Dolly Parton, now MARIAH CAREY???!11!! Are you shitting me?!?”

I’m not sure how it gets missed, but I think the quality of David Cook’s voice is being overlooked. I bought his Billie Jean and have listened to it on my iPod a couple of times, and he really has a superb voice - nice tone, good control, good - what’s the term, he sings the proper way at the proper moments in the song.

I agree with everyone about how boring Syesha is. She has a lovely voice, sings very well, and I am completely unmoved by her performances.

“Simon for President”

Thanks!

You know, every contestant does the same thing every week, they all have their schtick, it seems. I mean I think Jason Castro is the same every week, but people like him. But Cook seems to do it better, IMO. I think the key is that they all have their “thing” and if you are a fan of that particular “thing” then it is just a matter if the artist pulls it off. Cook definitley pulls off his schtick really well. Jason Castro does his thing usually very well, but personally I don’t like his “thing” so much.

That’s fine, but why all the props for being “brave” and “original”?

Probably just because this is American Idol where the singers tend to be more crooner, pop types. In the broader context it isn’t original, it fits in well with it’s genre of kind of alt-pop emo.

I missed David A. and Jason due to a couple of phone calls I had to take.

I thought Syesha’s runs were irritating and Carly was okay. Brooke and Kristy were not bad. David Cook was pretty good except that he sounded a bit mumbly to me.

I must say that Carly’s husband gives me nightmares. Please, camera operators: stay away from him.

If you trust DialIdol:

David Cook is leading David A.
Jason and Kristy Lee have maintained their leadership. :dubious:
Carly has topped Brooke.
Brooke and Syesha maintain the bottom. :o

This seems to be a universal thing. Below is the ranking of “Total Posts” for each contestant at the Idol forums.

               Topics Total Posts
Jason Castro	4365	104098
David Archuleta	4982	95579
David Cook	3120	63839
Michael Johns	1435	24382
Ramiele Malubay	1118	17634
Brooke White	797	9463
Carly Smithson	705	8393
Kristy Lee Cook	526	4223
Amanda Overmyer	406	3660
David Hernandez	326	3412
Syesha Mercado	370	2835
Chikezie	337	2086

Syesha ranks almost at the bottom.

Of course, the above list ranks Michael and Ramiele quite high, so this does not have too much of a correlation with who gets voted off, but it shows that Syesha just doesn’t generate that much excitement in people.

I sort fo feel sorry for her. People are rejecting her not for her lack of talent, but because she is “boring”, and that is a harder thing to come to terms with.

Heh heh - you said “thing.”

Polerius, I was thinking about Syesha this morning, wondering what career she has ahead of her as a very good but boring singer. Maybe a backup singer? Studio artist? Actress?

If I worked in the marketing department at Colgate or some such, I’d be looking to sign her for a toothpaste commercial. Her smile is dazzling and she’s generally attractive. But I don’t find her singing all that interesting.

That’s not surprising for two reasons: (1) it’s happened before, and (2) it makes sense (at least to me) that that’s where the majority of Michael John’s former voters would have gone.

She didn’t write it but she covered it and it was a hit.
Just like Whitney Houston did with “I Will Always Love You.”
Or like Elvis did with “Suspicious Minds.”
Or like Luther Vandross did with “All the the Woman I Need.”

I could go on but I think I’ve made my point.

I was taking a shot at Mariah’s song-writing skills, and not at the tastes of any Dopers. I meant no offense to anyone here.

OK, could they butcher this song (One Sweet Day-the group sing) any worse?

What happened? Is nobody posting? I’m stuck at work and need to know who got the boot!

Syesha, Brooke and Kristy Lee are the bottom 3.
