I think Carrie may actually do well with that song.
It’s really annoying me that some of these kids don’t bother to research the history of the songs they choose, thinking they’re supposedly from a certain era of music, when in fact they’re originally from a completely different one. For instance, the song Carrie is supposedly singing was actually written in 1966, which hardly qualifies it as a 21st century song! And it’s not even as if the cover version mentioned veers at all from the original – it’s still basically the exact same song; same melody, same beat, etc. (unlike, say, how completely different the original Bing Crosby version of “Try A Little Tenderness” is from the more well-known Otis Redding version). Nor was it obscur at the time, and more well-known or popular in the later incarnation, having been recorded and popularized by artists such as Cat Stevens (the guy who wrote it!) and Rod Stewart. Stewart’s version spent 13 weeks on the charts, 4 weeks at #1!
On preview: If the spoiler rumors turn out to be false, as Dio points out the possibility of, I retract my complaint with regard to this particular song, but leave it open as a general complaint overall. I just wish these kids would bother to take the time to actually learn about music and music history, as that’s what turns them from glorified karaoke singers into actual music artists.
I consider myself relatively musically literate (see the thread on Tiptoe Through the Tulips), and have devoted myself to listening (and learning to play) various genres for months up to a year or two at a time, but I also know I am 23 and what success Rod Steward had in 1977, five years before I was born, is gonna be pretty foreign to me. When Sheryl Crow’s version came out, I said to myself “this sounds really dang familiar. I guess it’s just a pretty simple melody and chord structure that’ve come up many times before (which it is on both counts), and the lyrics are more of the same general pleasant-sounding tripe (which they are).” Took a good while and stumbling quite accidentally into the Rod Stewart version to realize the song was a remake. Carrie’s one of the more intelligent musicians left (remember she was one of three last week to fake along on an instrument in 6/8 during the group performance), but there are limits that you have to forgive us young’uns.
Even the Rod Stewart version of “First Cut” is itself a remake of an original Cat Stevens tune.
I cut 100% slack to those who are just ordinary people listening to and/or discussing music because it interests them, and very little to those who are contestants choosing songs to perform on a national television show in an effort to win a million dollar recording contract. In your case, you’re just a viewer/listener who might or might not recognize a song as new or covered – there is no reason you should have to. In these kids’ cases, it’s more like they’re job interviewing and their prospective employer has asked them a question relevant to the field they’re trying to break into. During this portion of the interview process, they’re allowed several days of research to provide an answer. In this case, Carrie gave an incorrect answer, indicating that she hasn’t taken the time to understand the question or learn the material.
Oooh, I would love Bo to play “Here Without You”… That song is the one my friend (who introduced me to AI) and I sing along when we’re together Which, with the advent of his girlfriend, means not anymore.
I’m not certain I understand this. Last week, one of the contestants was describing the song-selection choice he had made for the week, including a phone consultation with his mother, and I was sure he mentioned having a list of eligible song songs to choose from. If this is the case, how would Carrie wind up with a song that did not meet the category specs?
Here we go!
Yea, I think last week it was Savol who mentioned talking to his grandmother about the songs.
What song is this one that Carrie is singing?
I saw an emotion on Carrie’s face!
Maybe it’s the beginning, but Paula is calmer…
That sucked badly.
Wow, I agree with Simon, I don’t get country music either.
OK girls, make way for me to front row, Bo is mine.
So, is it Songs of the Twenty-First Century, or what?
Clay scares me…
Her People Magazine cover article just came out denying drug use. So, she’s gonna downplay it tonight.
Heh… Bo has a girlfriend…
Wow, I didn’t notice his legs were slender…
Jeez, does he just suck tonight or is it the fact he has a girlfriend make me think this is lame?
Wow… Carrie did very well on that song… did very well. I’m watching this season on and off, but she did great… though as Randy said, she may have been singing a lower on pitch than the original.
