American Idol - 4/27

I voted for Diana tonight. Actually I tried voting for her tonight. It’s been busy and I only got through once. It was my only vote cast tonight.

Yeah, if the busy-signal factor is any indication, Diana is very safe. Both my wife and mother-in-law were trying to get through for better than a half-hour, and only got through twice each.

No problem getting through on George’s number, tho.

John looked very close to crying. When Simon was talking to him his bottom lip was quivering. If I were his father, I’d seriously have to consider pulling him from the competition. Each week he is getting crushed in front of a national audience and I can’t imagine this is going to do this guy much good. It would not suprise me to see him on one of those “Where are they now?” shows in 10 years and he is a crack addict mumbling about Simon hating him. He is 16, way out of his league and getting torn up each week.

Fantasia’s line was also busy, but I managed to get in quite a few votes.

It should be bottom two at this point and I doubt she’ll be there.

I pretty much agree with everyone so far, but I have an observation/question. Particularly with George, it seemed to me that there wasn’t much music backing him up – it was primarily all percussion – which is much harder to sound good in front of. It just doesn’t blend, if that makes any sense. I saw the guitar player playing, but damn if I could hear anything coming from those strings. I don’t know how to explain it. It just felt like George was singing pretty much without any backup, which contributed to how stark his voice sounded. I noticed the same thing to some degree with LaToya. Did anyone else hear it the same way I did?

And speaking of LaToya, even though she is technically the best singer and performer of the group, why does she bore me so much, even when she’s steppin’ it up? I wish I could pinpoint it. I just don’t feel inspired by her no matter how well she sings.

Diana had a few minor bloopers, but all-in-all she was the best of the night. I’m splitting my votes between her and George this week.

PLEASE, America, send John home tomorrow. He sucks so bad he’s an embarrassment to this show.

Anyone who thinks John Stephens did well tonight is tone deaf.

Well, he didn’t do any worse tonight than he’s done any other time he’s opened his mouth to sing, but people seem to like him anyway. There really is no accounting for taste sometimes.

Poor John. Did anybody read the article in today’s USA Today titled Could this guy kill American Idol?. It has to be tough to take that when you’re 16, which is not to say I disagree with the criticism but that I think the age limit should be raised to 18.

“Chocolate ice cream and an onion”… heh heh heh. Good one, Simon.

Did John forget the words again? :smack:

Yeah, I agree with the sentiment that John has taken WAAAY too much criticism (come on, an article saying this kid could RUIN American Idol?) and has handled it incredibly well. I mean at some point you have to stop and say that this is just a 16 year old kid and doesn’t deserve all this crap. What’s he gonna do, drop out? Would you?

My list:

  1. Diana
  2. LaToya
  3. Fantasia
  4. George
  5. John
  6. Jasmine

Blech. It made the Elton John night look good. They all were horrible. Horrible.

Gloria Estefan? I didn’t even realize she had six songs. Unfortunately, she does, and they’re all wrong for showcasing vocal talent. Ugh.

I really didn’t get Fantasia’s bringing up Jennifer. If you feel so bad about her going home, why don’t y’all switch places?

Diana: Best of the night and I liked the dress. She doesn’t have the greatest figure for it though.

Aaaaaand that’s about all I have to say. Can we just scrap this whole season and start over? No one deserves to win.

I would think that the Latin pop sound would be almost impossible to develop overnight for a competition. Janet Jackson, Clay Aiken, Kelly Clarkson, Bruce Springsteen and Justin Timberlake are all great entertainers in their own way and have a hard time imagining any of them “do[ing] that conga” on a moment’s notice, so I cut considerable slack to all performers in this. That said, I thought LaToya was the best (especially the dancing) and regardless of what the judges said Jasmine was terrible.

Gloria Estefan is a Manilow rather than a Tarantino judge who I honestly think would have given one of the Gumby brothers a “good job!” warm fuzzy that really means nothing.

Will someone please tell me what the world has come to when I will willingly listen to Gloria Estefan songs for an entire frickin’ hour? Unbelievable! I’ve never heard so many crappy songs sung so crappily in my entire life. Halfway through, when I realized the only three singers I actually cared to hear had already sung, I considered turning it off. But no, I just couldn’t do it. Train wreck effect I guess.
That said:
Fantasia: meh
George: meh, but I still love him
LaToya: meh, and that goes for the dancing too.
John: I think it’s time to do the right thing and put this kid out of his misery. Though Simon was right: John has taken it all like a man and for that he’s a real class act.
Jasmine: Double meh. She’s got some major issues with singing on-key.
Diana: Ugh. You’ve got to be kidding me. And no, I don’t want to see a 16-year-old in a dress like that dancing with a guitar player old enough to be her father. Frankly, and I never thought I’d say something like this, but I liked Carmen Rasmusen’s version better. There, it’s been said. Kill me now!

Fantasia seems to have forgotten who she’s speaking to, with the shout-outs for Jennifer. Jennifer wasn’t booted because the Russian judge gave her a 5.2; she was booted because the viewers didn’t like her. The same viewers Fantasia was addressing. D’oh.

Keeping John week after week is cruel. When the judges’ comments are on his ability to tolerate sustained abuse…please, teeny-boppers, put down your phones and let him go home.

Jasmine: awful. Diana: rocked.

I’m shocked some people are down on Jasmine’s performance. She was head and shoulders above everybody except LaToya…until Diana performed. Oh, and Jasmine’s haircut made her look older, which is to her advantage. She looked good.

John goes without saying, but I thought George was awful. He gets worse every week. At this point, I’d honestly rather hear John.

My nightly rankings:

  1. Diana

  2. Jasmine / LaToya (tie)

  3. Fantasia

  4. George (and he’s not close to Fantasia)

  5. John

I wanted to add to whoever was talking about the backup singers…I heard that too. Particularly during Jasmine’s performance, someone singing backup was waaaaay off. And loudly. Not close. I wonder if that affected her ability to stay on pitch (she still did better than anyone but Diana in that regard, from what I could hear).

My overall rankings, as long as I’m here.

  1. LaToya
  2. Jasmine
  3. Fantasia
  4. Diana
  5. George
  6. John

Speaking as a singer, I believe that what happened to Jasmine mid-way was that she totally lost the key of the song and it took her awhile to find it again. She started off pretty well and then just lost it, but had to keep singing anyway. She was probably confused by the band. Once she got back in key, she was too shaken to get back in the groove.

John is indeed a class act, but the vocal energy in his singing never varies, and it has to if you want to sell a song. He needs a good vocal instructor to teach him proper singing techniques so he can find the physical support to belt once it a while.

Diana – Best of Show, I thought. I didn’t expect it from her.

I agree with solasscc that the season started out looking like the best ever but has sort of fizzled. I don’t see any of the contestants ever becoming major acts.

She was feeling the “I’m too similar to LaToya” and was whoring for Jennifer’s voters to vote for her over LaToya.

Please, God, please, let them send Howdy Astley home tonight! Pretty please …
