I would recommend a well-made drink, especially a Bloody Mary, with vodka. Of all the various forms of ethanol, it seems to me that vodka is hardest to detect.
Order a daiquiri, and tell the server to go a bit light on the rum. Daiquiris are delicious.
For that matter, talk to your friends and learn about bars where they shaft you on the alcohol in the drinks. I can think of at least two bars I’ve been to where they didn’t put much alcohol in the drink; at least if they did, I sure as hell didn’t taste it.
Okay, first things first. Stop referring to getting drunk as getting “high”. When you drink alcohol you get drunk, smashed, sloshed, pissed, wrecked etc etc.
You get “high” by smoking pot, snorting coke or meth, dropping ectasy.
You have to pick your alcohol carefully, because you can get a different buzz from different drinks. What do you normally drink to get drunk? Secondly, you should try Coolers instead of screwing around with mixed drinks. Not sure how available they are in Singapore but a pre-mixed cooler under such brand names as Rev, WKD, Vex, Mike’s Hard etc are designed specifically for you not to taste the alcohol. Some better than others. Vex is 7% vodka and it doesn’t taste like vodka, WKD is 5.5% and it tastes like juice.
And if nothing works, depending on the legalities in Singapore, look into GhB. Same as getting drunk, but no taste and no hangover.
Uh, you might want to avoid GHB, even if it is legal there. The difference between an effective dose and a coma is a little too close for most peoples’ comfort.
I’m not a big drinker, but on the rare occasions I do bother to mix up a batch of something, it tends to be stuff with fruit in it. Real fruit, none of this bottled, premade mixer crap. I bet there’s some very yummy fruit in Singappore. Favorites:
Sangria (must include oranges and grapes, peaches are also good, but please, no unorthodox fruit like pineapple!). Sangria cut with sugar or soda water is for wimps. If you want to make t with an interesting kick, macerate the fruit first in brandy and/or an orange-based liqueur such as Grand Marnier
Caipirinha: a Brazilian drink made with limes, cachaca (a sugar cane based drink, probably hard to find where you are, but you can substitute rum), ice, and a bit of sugar. Delicious, but the darn things sneak up on you.
Mojito: very similar, but add fresh mint leaves.
I also make a mean mango daiquiri in my blender. Fresh ripe mangos, ice, lime juice, and rum to taste. Add a bit of sugar depending on the sweetness of the mangos and the proportion of lime juice.
Bonus: all of these actually taste good, at least IMO. And fruit actually has nutritional value!
Have you tried Ice Wine? Extremely expensive, but extremely delicious. I mean, mouth-watering. You may require a couple of bottles for a buzz, though, as there is usually only 2-1/2 to 3 glasses in a bottle.
Very expensive rye/whiskey in cider or apple juice is lovely also.
It’s been suggested that you stay away from Everclear, but it is 190 proof and for novice drinkers a couple of ounces will do the trick. It can be mixed with practically anything that you like (ie: orange juice, fruit punches, sodas, whatever) and the taste is barely noticeable if diluted enough. Say two or three glasses of your favorite drink each w/ a half shot of Everclear. That should do it!
disclaimer/warning…all alcohol (esp. E-clear) can be harmful to your health, so be careful
If you’d rather try something less potent I suggest trying a Mudslide, it’s more like a milk shake and the alcohol is hidden very well in the sweetness.
Personally I like straight shots of (take a guess)
As with most things, it’s an acquired taste.
I also concur w/ the Long Island Iced Tea folks. If mixed properly they are excellent. The alcohol taste shouldn’t be very noticeable.
I tried a butterscotch flavored shot of Schnapps once. It was like candy.
A slightly different approach from what anyone’s mentioned:
Get the strongest, foulest booze available. Drink it straight. Do this until you can tolerate it. Go get something with some quality to it, mix it into a refreshing beverage. Enjoy.
Do NOT, however, do this all in one night. And by “until you can tolerate it,” I mean the taste. Do this over time, not “I’m so loaded I could drink antifreeze”
The first few times I drank, it was Bacardi 151, no chaser. After that devil drink, most anything else was damn good in comparison.
However, if you don’t want to go that route, I’m a big fan of mixing together vodka, orange juice (pulp free) and cranberry juice. Delicious, and you can protect yourself from scurvy!
