An ongoing list of The Straight Dope's most epic assholes.

And I think you’re cool too, despite being wrong so often.

I disagree. Having an opinion, whatever it is, that You, or even this entire forum, disagrees with, doesn’t make a fellow poster an asshole.

This is all subjective, of course, but in my view if you think Jews are evil, you’re an asshole. If you think black people are inferior, you’re an asshole. If you think Christians are evil, you’re an asshole.

I don’t know about that. He’s willfully ignorant and frames anything at all as an ideological dig. He’s unable to say, “meh.” Obama drinks a beer it’s below the dignity of the office. He drinks some wine it’s tone-deaf extravagance. He drinks some water it’s a slap in the face to the patriotic Americans who drink alcohol.

He’s an asshole, imho, because he has to run every fact through that lens of partisan stupidity and then declare it as fact.

I agree with iiandyiiii. Some opinions do make you an asshole.

If your opinions are immune to facts, holding them makes you an asshole. If your opinion is that evolution isn’t real, or climate change is a scam, you’re an asshole. Because the facts are out there. Assholes hold on to opinions in the face of reality.

Of course other things can make you an asshole too.

If your opinion can be subject to factual analysis, such as denying climate change or the holocaust, sure holding on to that opinion despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary can make you an asshole.

In this case, the argument was whether the President should have sent a high level official to the Paris march. Not only does thinking he made a mistake not make me an asshole, but the mainstream media and the administration itself agrees with me. I’m an asshole because I punctured his bubble of ignorance that the President did the right thing. Which is a valid opinion, but he seemed to think it was the only valid opinion. Which is really kind of assholic.

Jesus. Just post “Please put me on the asshole list. I deserve it!” Spare us the demonstration.

Continually bringing THAT thread into THIS thread is putting you on the fast track for Platinum Level membership. Don’t know what the perks are, but they probably include unlimited corn.

Actually, Chefguy brought the thread here. And before he brought it here, he threatened to bring it here, from that thread. So does that make him a double asshole?

No, it’s off his chest.

Can’t you read, asshole?

If that makes someone an asshole, this place would look like the round of 64 at the World Speed Prostate Exam Championships.

What if you think that Americans, or Republicans are evil? Does that make one an asshole?

Woah, that came out of left field.

I think people confuse three different things when they talk about opinions.

Personal preferences are a kind of opinion (“Ice cream is great!”). There’s no arguing about these, and if someone thinks you’re an asshole because you hate basketball or country music or love tofu or don’t care about Greek mythology, that person’s an idiot.

Statements about how the world ought to be are a kind of opinion as well, but they tie into ethics. Some statements about how the world should be–“We should decriminalize pot” or “we should decrease taxes on imports” or “we should watch less television”–are pretty innocuous. Others – “We should outlaw Islam in our country,” or, “We should not allow gay people to get married,” or, “We should send him to prison to be raped”–are automatically asshole opinions. In any case, this category of opinion requires support with facts. If you can’t support your opinion with facts and details but you insist on sharing it anyway, you’re kind of an asshole.

Then there are statements about how the world is, statements you can’t prove. I think it’s a terrible idea to call these statements opinions. It’s not your opinion that the World Trade Center was bombed by the Jews, it’s a mistaken fuckin belief. It’s not my opinion that Common Core contains no requirements for schools to teach PETA materials, that’s simple fact.

If someone defends themselves against charges of being an asshole by saying that’s just like their opinion, man, they’d better be talking about matters of preference and aesthetics, not questions of ethics or fact.

And since, by your own admission, the mainstream media and the administration are wrong and cannot be trusted, you must be wrong as well if they’re agreeing with you.

And just to preempt the inevitable - no, not a band name.

How’d you do this year, by the way?

Except we’re not dealing with a matter of facts here. It’s strictly opinion. There are no assholes in your Billboard chart threads for example. There shouldn’t be in a thread on whether the President should have gone to Paris. There is no factually right or wrong answer to that question. Just opinions, and the weight of opinion seems to indicate that he or a high level official should have gone. Which even the administration admits at this point, making Chefguy’s issue all the more perplexing.

Actually, adaher brought corn into the asshole conversation in post 127, and I found it a bit … disturbing. Nonetheless, best we move on now.

Out of medal stand unfortunately. Stupid Eastern bloc nations and their 'roided up index fingers.
