An SDMB server: calling all Counter-Strike:Source players!

I hadn’t seen the email and I was just looking for some games when I saw the immortal 1920’s style death rays on the server list. I have been playing too much CS:S lately, but my game is gettting better. I feel okay about dropping my usual name for the games, C.F. McButtmunch. The CF stands for cannon fodder because I would get maybe 1 kill for every 5 or 6 deaths. Is there a way to secure the servers against hacks? It sucks pumping 30 rounds into somebody and they don’t die, but then they kill you with one pistol shot.

Well that worked out pretty well. I got sidetracked and had to leave at around 9:30. Sorry bout that.

Interestingly, Inle-Rah and I were in the server early on going 1v1, knifing each other and generally just screwing around. A single public player joined and we played like 2 rounds of 2v1. After that the server exploded and we were at 12v12 in about 10 minutes. I’m suprised it worked out this way, but it’s a good thing as we may only need a Doper or two to get things going at any point in the future.

I could be wrong, but I’d be very suprised if this were a hack. Basically the known hacks are Aimbots, Wallhacks, and Speed hacks (yay, we had one last night…jackass). Never heard of an “armor hack” that would prevent death from a full clip laid into someone. Not really any way I know of to prevent these things right off the bat. Valve has been pretty slow in patching up these holes (i.e. no punkbuster or other security modules).

Wallhacks and Aimbots can be tough to spot, but since we can watch suspicious players from a 1st person view, a little surveillance usually works out. Incidently I’m of the mind to kick/ban anyone from the Myg0t clan preemptively.

The real kicker is where you say “pumping 30 rounds into somebody”. If you get a chance, try shooting all 30 rounds from any of the rifles into a wall. You’ll notice that after the first 5 or 6 shots, bullets are literally flying into the ceiling! Often times it feels like you’ve emptied a whole clip into someone (even from close) when in fact you may have only hit with 1 bullet. Short bursts (about 1sec interval clicks on the mouse) are really the way to go. Can be devastating, especially at long range.

Not that you don’t know any of this! I’m sorta repeating it to myself since I admit I sometimes get panicky in close combat and reflexively hold down that trigger. Spray and Pray indeed.

That must be it. I would often see some blood spray on the wall, but most rounds must be missing. However, I do try for head shots and even the that assault rifle with the scope it usally takes 2 rounds, but I have been knocked down more than once by a single hand gun shot. I don’t mind getting shot, but yesterday I must of had 3 or 4 deaths from being stabbed - I need to work on checking my 6 more often.

I’d suggest turning up your sound and using headphones. Those footsteps are very noticeable when they’re close. You don’t really need surround sound to be able to tell when someone is coming up behind you. Very few have the discipline to use the silent walk key for sustained periods of time.

Moreover, when I’m playing I’m constantly hitting TAB to see who’s alive and who’s dead. When you know you’re the only one left on your team, the footsteps become VERY helpful. Playing with no sound or low sound (only enough to hear gunshots) can be knife-city.

So you are saying that I shouldn’t have the music playing? I can never tell where the footsteps are coming from, because it seems that they sound the same even if they are coming through a wall. However, I will give that a shot tonight.

Last night I experienced the problem I usually have from the other side for once. I was face to face with an enemy and he shot at me about 4 times and hit me once in the chest and I dropped him with a single pistol shot. I guess that others aren’t always cheating. However, that measns I suck more than I thought.

I tried HL2:DM for the first time. That is really cool but I spent way to much time re-spawning.

Also, what does AWG stand for? I assume that it has to do with cheating, but I just can’t figure it out.

I think you mean “AWP”, which people complain about. It’s the one shot kill sniper rifle - I, and a lot of other people dislike it, because it can ruin the fun of the game, especially if a lot of people are using it. Some maps are worse than others.

Short rounds thing is the hardest, because it’s counter-intuitive. You think: “I’m in a race to the death with this guy here: if I pause that’s just more time for him to shoot and kill me: which can happen almost instantly: I’ve got to take him out ASAP.” But the reality is that if you miss, it doesn’t much matter that you’re holding down the trigger.

What do I need to play. Which game do I buy?

Counter-Strike: Source is a online multiplayer game that comes with Half-Life 2. I can safely say that the best way to buy this is through Steam.

I noticed that the server was unavilable last night. Is it going to only be up when we have matches scheduled? Or could we drop in and see if a game develops?

It should be up 24/7.

It wasn’t because the server downloaded a security patch last night and auto rebooted… I need to figure out how to turn that off.

I’ll poke my head in there, and get it shot off  ) at about 8:00 tonight Central Time- if anybody is interested.

I’ll try to get in there at that time (though I’m not sure how long I can stay).

Lets see if 2 is the magic number again.

My computer is so remarkably fucked right now that I probably won’t be able to play in at least a week while I build a new computer.

That is… unless I can get the program to run on this gf2 mx. Seems unlikely but maybe I’ll try later.

I was having fun right up to the point where one of our cats decided to puke on my camera case, which required me to log off.

I need to get my microphone working - I’ve tried all of the mic plugs on my computer, but none of them seem to be the one that CS:S is trying to use. Perhaps I shouldn’t be running three soundcards, but that’s what works for my DJ setup. Not that I’ve done any DJing in more than a year.

Yeah, we had a pretty decent game going. I too disappeared mysteriously at one point. My GF unplugged the cable modem to plug in the vacuum! :smack:

I wondered what was going on. At one point things were going nicely, but suddenly I was all alone. I went to another server that only plays the office map - I like that one, except I was auto assigned as a terrorist. That map is almost always won by a decent group of terrorists - being a CT there is more of a challenge. I started out great though. After an auto balance I took out 4 CT with my pistol before being killed.

I am spending way too much time with this game.

I ran the video stress test that Steam provides and I got a measure of 89.43 fps. That sounded good to me but I don’t know how that compares. What scores are you guys getting on the vid stress test?

If anyone wants to try for another game tonight, I’m gonna head into the server with a friend right now. That’ll make 2!

Let’s see if we can attract some of the teeming millions.
