Anatomy Question

  1. In weightlifting, does using a thumbs-up grip to do side dumbell raises work the front (lateral?) delt more and does using a thumbs forward grip work the the side (medial?) delt more and does using a thumbs down grip work the rear delt more?

  2. Also, same question for front raises.

  3. Also, same question for front and side raises, but with a palms-up grip.

All these questions should be proceeded with a, “To what degree?”. My guess is it doesn’t make a huge difference, but then again, sometimes it doesn’t take a huge difference in training to make a huge difference in muscle growth.

  1. Also, what is the most stable anatomical shoulder/arm position for front and side raises?

Well, from a strictly anatomic viewpoint, the deltoids do not attach to the forearm. So pronating or supinating your forearm shouldn’t affect the deltoid contraction.
