For me at least, the issue isn’t his age. It’s his general disrespect towards everyone, with a soupçon of sexism. He also thinks that electing Bernie will result in executions à la the French Revolution, which is just silly.
I’m surprised you could even hear me… <ducks>
Flintlocks at 30 paces, sir.
He’s generally an ignorant a-hole. MSNBC prefers a higher caliber of a-hole. Like Rachel.
For heaven’s sake. Calling Chris Matthews an asshole isn’t ageist. Pointing out that 74 is well into retirement age isn’t ageist. Come on.
ETA: I’m 55 FWIW.
And Chris Mathews has retired. He made an announcement right at the top of the show.
Big board Steve has taken over after the announcement.
You didn’t point out that he was well into retirement age. You said, “He’s 74? He should have retired a decade ago. If this is what gets him pushed out, fine.”
You could have just said he was an asshole and left it at that.
That announcement was WILD. I was about to turn it off or at least down and he just blurted it out and went right to commercial. I was like… huh. That’s surprising and not surprising but then Kornacki came out and was visibly shaken. I didn’t know CM wasn’t coming back at all… and neither did anyone else at msnbc, apparently!
I think CM just wasn’t the man for the minute, but I do feel bad on a personal level because he’s been sick. He’s not evil… just not adapting for the times and not self-aware.
Yeah, his habit of repeatedly interrupting and talking over guests was maddening, and I got fairly tired of his referencing all politics to his Philly/Scranton experiences, but IMO he was also quite skilled at shutting down people who were trying to bullshit their way through an interview.
He may indeed have stayed in the game a bit too long, but he seemed to be quite well respected by his peers. Kornacki seemed to be on the verge of tears at the end of the show.
Aside from the issue mentioned in the OP, he’s recently been undergoing treatment for prostate cancer. I have to wonder if something related to that factored into his decision.
When Kornacki threw the show to Rachel Maddow, she responded with, “Thank you, Chris.”
Taped earlier in the day, perhaps.
That wasn’t Kornacki; that was Chris Hayes, who has hosted the hour before Maddow’s (and after Matthews’) for a couple of years.
Ok, Boomer.
Seems like he was the first of the cable news commentators I listened to circa Y2K, along with Hannity & Combes. Now I much prefer the likes of Nicolle Wallace, Ari Melber and Chris Hayes on MSNBC. Will not miss CM.
it looked like they just shoved poor steve out there. apparently some people were told only one hour before. the announcement was just stunning.
I do like steve and his big board. he is enthusiastic and kinetic. I only watch hardball when steve is in for chris.
Kornacki had a complete deer in the headlights look. Holllllyyyy shit. “Steve, put on your jacket, find a tie if you can. You’re up”. Then he said we are going to a break, but will be back because we still have to fill this hour.
Wow.
What a namby-pamby world it’s become.
I will miss Chris’ somewhat moderate voice on MSNBC.
I often disagreed with him, and Chris could be overly aggressive and abrasive with guests that he disagreed with.
Matthews usually tried to show both sides of issues. Old school moderates are increasingly rare these days. We’re seeing that every day during the D. primary and in our gridlocked government.
That’s OK, Boomer, SIR.
Moderating: I’m going to assume you were joking because if you were being dismissive and insulting it would get you a warning.
Wanted CM to resign with the Bernie=Nazis comment. I also thought he was anti-Hillary always putting her down and giving faint praise to Trump. MSNBC is better off without him.
