Damn, I love this Arnold guy! What a sharpster! I’ve yet to see anyone get the better of him.
Matthews is interviewing him (on the Stanford campus, no less) and is striving to back him into a corner or make him look bad, and every time Arnold turns it back on him. The result? Matthews sits there looking impotent while the audience roundly applauds Arnold. At one point, in response to more badgering by Matthews, Arnold actually put his hand on Matthews’ shoulder and said, “Chris…Chris…wait…don’t be so short-sighted!”
Much applause ensued.
I don’t care much for Matthews. He tends to be a loudmouth and a verbal bully, especially with those on the other side of the aisle politically. It’s a kick to see him get tossed aside so deftly and easily by The Governator. It reminded me of a line by Peter Falk as Sam Diamond in Murder by Death: 'Pit wits wit me, little man, and you won’t have a wit to pit wit!"
Oh, now I’m pissed for missing this! Do you have a link to the transcript or anything?
Chris Matthews is one tough interviewer. Hell, even Limbaugh a while back praised him for sticking to the questions and following through. His politics don’t enter the questions, from what I’ve seen, and he seems to try to get to the heart of matters without trying to spin the talk towards a political bent.
Sight unseen I’ll mark Ah-Nold (as you bitter lefty shits will say) as a few notches above Nancy and Diane in being honest in what they say while in a position of power.
For you lefties, go back to the DU template of quoting whatever fruitcake is e-mailing you talking points on Bush to post to the Pit.
(Whatever you want to parse in that, go right ahead. I had much more to say, but my speech is hindered by what twists you lefties will apply to what I actually say.)
You think? I don’t watch Matthews regularly but on the occasions when I have, his political leanings have been fairly well in evidence. The most egregious example I can think of lately would have been his treatment of Zell Miller after his speech at the Republican Convention. He would ask Miller a question, and then yell, shout, laugh and steamroller every one of Miller’s answers. Miller became visibly quite angry and eventually said he wished for the days when you could challenge someone to a duel. If I had seen Matthews on the street the next day I would have had to restrain the urge to slap the shit out of him.
The website indicates their transcripts are posted within twenty-four hours of broadcast, so it’ll probably be tomorrow night before you can read it. However, tone of voice and audience reaction is what really told the tale tonight and I doubt they will come through effectively on the transcript.
Second, I know what you mean with regards to a live audience being a part of what is read in a transcript. Much like a reference to a Daily Show “interview” you have to take into account what is said and what is shown. And how it’s shown.
There are many in the US forming their opinions based on whom makes them laugh for 22 minutes and not what is said in substance.
Oh right, like when he had Pat Robertson on a few weeks ago, and tossed him nothing but softballs to hit out of the park. Because, he’s like a big liberal an’ stuff. You just can’t abide any probative questions to Republicans can you? Anybody who is not a 100% Bushco lapdog is a dick. Name one media personality whom you think is fair to both sides of the aisle; your answer should be quite amusing. Bipartisan = Lib’rul, right SA?
I happened upon MSNBC a few hours ago and caught the last 15 minutes of the interview.
My take? Just in those 15 minutes Arnold handed Chris his “media-rules-all-worship-me” ass on a platter. My opinion of Matthews being neutral is forever altered. Neutered. Now that I’ll beleive.
I’m hoping for a bare-knuckle fight of Bush/Cheney/Gibson/Willis/Arnold vs. Alec/Moore/Clooney/Mellencamp/Springstein.
Hmm. Let’s see here. You make a connection to Bill O’Reilly based on an allusion to Jon Stewart. Yet,* YOU GOT WHAT I MEANT!*. Fuck. You busted me there.
IT MUST HAVE BEEN THE LAMEST FUCKING JOKE EVER IF EVEN YOU GOT IT!
OK, I’m done with you. Go back to playing with your dolls.
Right. I didn’t get that you were talking about Jon Stewart and turn it around so it was about some right-wing talking head instead. 'Cause, see, Democrats laugh at him, too - only for different reasons. Or maybe they don’t. I’m just playing by your rules, in which a whole voting bloc is assumed to base their opinions on TV hosts. Of course, all this loses its effectiveness as sarcasm when I have to take the time to explain it to you.
Seems I’m not the one who didn’t get the joke, you stupid-ass fuck.
As opposed to some people who have mistaken their liver for their brain, and bile for thought.
These people are called Republicans.*
Seriously, Duffer, you seem bound and determined to turn this into a hijack about left vs. right politics.
Chris Matthews is the equivalent of that bully in fourth grade; remember him? Only he does it completely with words, and instead of getting detention, gets a fat cable-network contract. But the attitude is identical. (FWIW, I didn’t like that when a far-Left asshole did the same thing, some years back.)
And remember that Arnold is “Conan the Republican” – a moderate Rightist on the one-dimensional scale.
And my sincere apologies to the thoughtful Republicans on this board who hold their positions out of moral judgment and intellectual analysis. I think it’s clear which of your co-GOP-ists I am reversing Duffer’s taunt at, and it’s not directed at you, OK?
Back to the OP- I have watched Chris Matthews for years now, and his own political feelings are often kept out of his interviews. Not always, of course- I know he’s no republican! But he is smart, sharp and quick on his feet.
Schwarzenegger is also a pretty bright guy. I wish I had seen the interview.
Just because our political views differ doesn’t mean I have to pretend somebody’s an idiot.
Chris Mathews is not a partisan hack and if someone can glean that from watching his show (and especially the interview with Zell Miller), that person is hopelessly biased towards finding bias against the Right in the media. If anything is ever said against someone who is “openly” Republican, he is a leftie. Great analysis, Starving Artist.
Reminds me a bit about ** Sam Stone’s** branding of Collounsbury as a leftie because he opposed the Iraq invasion.
Oh, please! Matthews is a former Democrat speech-writer, and, like most of his compatriots, he can’t keep his true feelings completely swept under the rug. I liked him when his show first started and had several positive conversations with other people about his fairness. But the longer he was on and the more popular he bacame, the more careless he became about showing his true colors and the more bullying became his style. This was especially the case in that atrocious interview with Zell Miller.
It has been said that people see in others a reflection of themselves, and I would suggest your opinion of my right-wing bias is more correctly a reflection of your own left-wing bias.
Oh, and rjung. Boy, ya got me there, all right. I wish I could come up with such brilliantly slashing coughchildishcough invective as you seem able to do so efforlessly.
