...and now the bad news.

Well, we are scheduled to sign the mortgage within days. It’s one of the most important events we’ve been through since we’ve been married. Big new exciting chapter in our life. So what does that mean is going to happen to Tygr? You guessed it.

I’ve been laid off.

Again.

Yep, just in time for us to need our financial situation to be in the best shape it’s ever been, Tygr loses his job. Wonder what the mortgage lender will think of that? Ah, well, maybe we can keep it a secret for another coupl’a days. I won’t file for unemployment until after we sign.

Money won’t be a problem for a little while. I was given a month’s extra pay. By then unemployment will have kicked in. It’s just an enormous hassle.

It HAS gotten me down a bit. Being “downsized” three times in almost as many years could be expected to do that to a guy. I’ve decided that the next company I go to work for should be financially stable.

Sure, but that’s what sold me on THIS company. They told me they were doing great when I was hired. Believe me, I asked numerous times. What sucks is that back in August I left a great position at the production office because I was told they needed me at the main office. They were short on creative talent then, but less than six months later I’m the first one to be cut loose when their sales figures start to dip. I honestly feel like a freshman sorority girl who’s been sent home after being passed around at a fraternity kegger.

So, I’m back trolling the want-ads again. Thrills-ville. I’ll drop my updated resume off at my school’s placement office. And maybe the Unemployment Office will have some leads. Any idea how much I hate going there? Just a personal dislike for opting into that beaurocracy. As someone who has a measure of distaste for government money programs, I gotta admit part of me finds going on the dole humiliating. I know, I know, “That’s what it’s there for.” But still…

Ok, now more bad news. The guy that owns the house we’re trying to buy got the estimate on what it’s going to cost him to replace the septic field. He got rather agitated. Started saying things like “If it’s going to cost me THAT much, I don’t know why I’m bothering to sell at all.” That started getting both of us worried. OK, we began to panic. If they back out of the deal, we got nowhere to live (our landlord has already leased our apartment). Plus we’d have to start the whole looking process over again. I don’t know if we can take it if we hafta start again a third time.

On the other hand, he’s gonna have to replace that field one way or the other - the county could possibly condemn the property if he doesn’t. Plus if they back out, it’ll cost 'em quite a bit anyway.

So there is some excitement here. (Understatement, anyone?)

And I haven’t been posting from the office this week. My home computer is notoriously unreliable, as is our dial-up connection. This thread is just for the teeming thousands of you out there who’d been wondering where Tygr was. And I **know ** all of you were, right?

:: Crickets chirp in the distance ::

Right?

{{{{Tygr}}}}

I know it sounds trite and maudlin, but things will get better for you.

wow, thats pretty shitty Tygr. I hope that everything works out for you.

My dear screech-owl, coming from you, nothing sounds trite and maudlin. Thank you.

I feel for you. Due to lay offs, I worked 6 jobs in 4 years, and a lot of employers wouldn’t even give me an interview because of all the job changes. The cio of one company told me “I can’t hire you, your cursed. If I hire you, we’ll be out of business in 6 months!”(he hired me any way, and they are).

I don’t know what unemployment is like where you are, but here it comes from a fund payed for by your former employer. The employers, as I understand it, pay into this fund get it back at the end of the year if no-one claims it. So it really isn’t costing the taxpayers, just your former employer.

Man Tygr, I’m really sorry. From what I hear, things are still jumping, business wise, around Raliegh. I’m sure that you’ll find something in no time.

Things will get better. They always do.

Actually, I had wondered why we hadn’t heard from you lately. Don’t be a stranger.

Tygr, you could always join the Army. Anyway, I hope you find a new job fast. Good luck with everything!

Jman

Dang. :frowning:

“Don’t Panic”.

At least you know where your towel is, right?

((((Tygr))))

Best of luck to you, my friend! And if you can, try & get some kind of insurance on your loan that will help you cover the payments in case of job loss, just in case this happens again.

So sorry to hear this, Tygr. What horrible timing! I’m sending good employment vibes your way and hoping things look up soon. Good luck.

Ouch. Sometimes I’m glad we rent.

I hope everything works out for you Tyger - keep us posted!

Thanks loads for the good wishes, y’all. Yer da bestest!

Tommy: Last statistics put us at around 1[sup]1[/sup]/[sub]2[/sub]% unemployment - referred to as statistically zero. Let’s just hope the promise of that comes through for yours truly.

Jman: Yeah, I hear the Army is really putting out the call for graphic designers.

Duck Duck Goose: Boy, I could go for some hoopy vrood food right now.

Persephone: Thanks-a-10[sup]6[/sup]! That’s a GREAT idea we’d not considered.

…and what’s this?

Mmmmm. Vibes from Geobabe. Mmmmmmm.

Oh! Sorry. Must get back to circling want-ads.

[sub]Mmmm - Geo-vibes…[/sub]

Tygr. If you would not mind working for a consultant in the construction industry, largely on magazines and books (though we’re building a new website), e-mail me a copy of your resume immediately. We’re recruiting for a new graphics man, the one we had having left to get into more interactive-design stuff. I’ll forward it on to the lady running that end of our business (who happens to owe me a favor).

Can’t promise anything. But I can at least give you the lead.

the 987[sup]th[/sup] Doper (a conservative estimate) to nominate Polycarp for SDMB sainthood.

Dude, yer awesome… The thought that I might get a lead here on the boards honestly never entered my head. I started this as just another “Callahan’s” moment.

While I am trying to learn html design in my spare time (HA!), traditional design is still my main interest. So sure, I’m on my way over to the office to re-vitalize my portfolio. (The boss is allowing me to still come in when I’m not “in the hunt”.) I can convert my resume to PDF format, if your people can view it that way.

Now, hic where’d you hide that fireplace?

Keep the chin up, buckaroo - good luck with everything.

I feel your pain, Tygr! I got laid off yesterday (just started a thread about it). And I just bought my first car less than 3 months ago! So I’ve got bills up the wazoo.

But it sounds like you’re in a field that has need for people right now, so you’re lucky. Don’t give up your dream house yet! You’ll find a job.

I’m sending prayers and star-vibes to you and the Missus, just in case.

Aw, hell, no worries, mate! The mortgage company got your job referral weeks ago. Not updating the info is a good plan.

<fingers crossed>

But we really could use a break right about now. I really appreciate everyone’s good wishes for my baby. I am trying to keep him upbeat.

I just want to sign for the house and get everything calmed down a bit. We have money coming in and can afford a house payment. At least he got a decent severence arrangement, plus we can get unemployment to supplement for a while.

Anyway, he will find a job soon. I’m totally sure.

Stargazer: Sorry to hear your layoff news. It seems to be going around. Hope you find something soon. Prayers and employment wishes to you!

My guess is that dropzone is right – your employment was verified a while ago. Mr. Winkie and I just got our mortgage approval for our first house, and I don’t think we sign the mortgage until closing (Jan 31). The mortgage company verified my employment today.

Two such stressful events at once – I’ll think all the good thoughts I have at you!!! Good luck!
