Actually, according to Bruce Campbell, the whole point of the original ending of Army of Darkness was to not conclude the series, but instead to pave the way for a fourth movie where Ash battles evil robots in a post-apocalyptic future.I once started a thread to discuss whether the original ending would have been preferable to the one ultimately released: Army of Darkness: Original Ending or Theatrical Release? (SPOILERS, obviously)
FTR, I still think that it wasn’t even close. the S-Mart ending was infinitely wittier, provided a buttload of excellently quotable lines (without it we wouldn’t have had “Hail to the King,” to name only one), and provided closure without precluding future sequels as Bruce Campbell seemed to think it did. I for one am relieved to no end that the presumptive fourth film will likely start off at S-Mart (albeit perhaps with an Ash who’s made assistant manager status by this time) and won’t necessarily feature robots.
Ooh! This makes for fun speculation:
George Lucas: Casts his most popular CGI character in the role of Ash – signature line: “This-sa is meesa boomba-stick!” (I know, I know, not from ED1 or ED2, but it’s what I got.)
Or maybe Jerry Bruckheimer…
Heck, the beginning of A-of-D didn’t match up with the ending of ED2, so what’s the big deal?
It has always bugged me that some of the medieval guys in Army Of Darkness were wearing leather gloves, painted silver.
Sorry
Hey, I hadn’t heard that, but I’m all about killer robots. Awesome!
I’m for the
killer robots. But I;'d prefer killer undead cybernetic deadite robot androids
A few years back, I went to the premiere of Bubba Ho-Tep, hosted by Bruce Campbell.
During the question/answer phase before the movie, I asked him, “I know there’re two endings for Army of Darkness- the American “S-Mart” ending, and the Japanese “Post-Apocalyptic” ending. Which one do you prefer?”
He said, “Well, I… no, wait- which one do YOU prefer?”
I said, “I thought the post-apocalyptic version made more sense. The S-Mart ending felt tacked on, like it was added after the fact. I didn’t care for it at all, and thought it actually ruined the storyline.”
The crowd started booing me, telling me I was an idiot, that sort of thing.
But Bruce interrupted them. “No, no- he’s absolutely right. The Japanese ending IS the best version.”
So there you go. Even Bruce prefers the post-apocalyptic version.
I read the story. I also read this story.
So, what’s the real story? Evil Dead 4 or a remake of the original Evil Dead? Raimi or somebody else directing?
Both. And, Both.
