I am listening to Cuomo right now with his New York update on the virus and it just reminds me with every word he speaks just how callous, non-presidential and - IMO - unintelligent Trump must be.
I am not a New Yorker or really even a fan of Cuomo but given his spotlight with the pandemic, I have listened to him quite a bit lately. Cuomo is giving sensible, calming - and yes political - words but he seems very down to earth, human and at some level caring of the citizens he governs. He has spent as much time giving personal anecdotes and common sense language as he has facts and numbers.
This is in stark contrast to Trump, who to put it bluntly sounds like some 15th century king who is completely out of touch. He comes across as a really unlikeble asshole everytime he speaks and I simply cannot understand how he appeals to anyone OUTSIDE of people who are just like him (racist pathelogical liars).
Even Pence who is about the most clueless and myopic politician this side of Rick Perry can at least speak in a way that appeals to the far right base… but how does even the most hard core republican not roll their eyes everytime Trump speaks?
Heck I do not HATE all of his policy stances (I do disagree with many) but his lies are almost as comical as the brainwashed who believe him.
I am almost as far from being “progressive” as I am from a republican but as a centrist, I have to say at this point I would sign up right now for 4 years of Mitt Romney just to ensure we do not have 4 more years of Trump.
I have an issue with your characterization of Trump’s speech. Her doesn’t sound like a 15th century king. Rather, he sounds like a 6th grader’s idea of what a 15th century king would sound like.
I like the Cuomo family. Mario, Matilda, Andrew, Chris and all the rest. I would take Gov. Cuomo over Sanders or Biden in a heartbeat. He’s competent, he gives a shit, and he gets things done. That’s really enough for this voter. I could list a lot times I’ve been frustrated with Cuomo, disagreed with him and/or chided him for not moving fast enough. At the end of the day though, instead of just talk, Cuomo has pushed through actual, progressive legislation. I don’t need a goddamn hero, or an idol. Give someone who can get the job done and keep cool in a crisis.
Apart form all that, Andrew Cuomo needs to get some sleep. He looks like he’s been up for a week.
I’ve never cared much for Andrew Cuomo, but I’m not a New Yorker, so I’m sure my disdain has rolled off his back. And in this crisis, I’m flabbergasted at the lack of a shelter-in-place order for New York. It’s the state in the US with the fastest growth rate of new infections. It was just a couple of days ago that New York and Washington had roughly the same count at a bit under 1000. Now, Washington has 1376 and New York has 5298! Maybe you could convince me that this is because NY is all over testing the last couple of days, but it looks a lot more to this West Coaster like it’s burning out of control in NY, and they need to shut everything.
ETA: Washington above refers to the state in the upper left. Not that little district nestled between Virginia and Maryland.
I just noticed that as soon as the Trump press conference started this morning with the “China Virus” that the Dow Jones Index reversed course and started declining again.
They do. I listen to conservative talk radio every now and then (some of them are entertaining though I disagree with most of their stances now) and they don’t defend his demeanor or the things he says. You can tell that the vast majority of the right dislikes him personally but puts up with him. Most of what I hear are things like, “We know he says embarrassing, sometimes horrible things, but you have to ignore that.” The argument in favor of him usually ranges between things like he’s better than the alternative, or his policies are mostly in line with the right wing, or he’s done useful things like appoint judges and push through favorable tax legislation. Oh and the economy has been good! (Though that last one is hard to argue now.)
But yes, even Republicans roll their eyes and don’t like him much. If you are a sports fan, think of him like the star on your favorite team who says dumb things, does deplorable stuff in his private life, and is generally unlikeable yet is a big reason why your team gets wins. If you’ve ever experienced that, you probably can understand how most Republicans feel.
Of course there are also Trump cultists who think everything he says is telling the unvarnished truth, and only snowflakes and left wing saps falling for fake news have problems with him.
