This has got to be a typo:

Can this be true? Were they planning on having an elaborate mobile support structure following her around, so she wasn’t crushed by her own damn clothes?

maybe British pounds as in money? Like, what, $5000?
It does mean money. They had next to it ($4,500). You would think the would know how to make the symbol - not that I do.
Perhaps it’s been edited… it now reads, “Jolie’s outfit was described as a 3,000-pound (about $4,500) body-hugging corset dress decorated with cherubs.”
Since it happened in London, the pounds is most likely the currency unit.
Tho it would be interesting to see someone go to the Oscars in power armor (like in Aliens).

Doh! I never even considered that they were talking about currency.
Heh heh, I must not have been the only one who misunderstood, since they edited it.
Does this mean Angelina will have to go to the awards naked?
(a boy can dream, can’t he?)
Angelina Jolie is now a Gundam Wing pilot.
maybe she will be wearing Billy Bob.
Re: “money” dresses, anybody remember that dress made out of American Express Credit Cards? (I think it was worn by the Australian winner of Best Costume for Pricilla, Queen of the Desert).
But if the awards go on as planned on Sunday, look for lots of black simple outfits. I think the generally accepted change of plans is to go for the understated look.
But it is starting to look like the Oscars might be delayed a few weeks - so who knows.
My 1997 Toyota Camry weighs a little over 3,000 lbs. Perhaps I can lend it out for Oscar night.
They didnt have power armor in Aliens but they were supposed to in Starship Troopers, unless you mean the big loader thing which was just an anthropomorphic forklift.
