Ann Heche -- the Shelley Long of the new millennium

I’m watching Men in Trees, her new show, and just figured out who she reminds me of.

Having figured this out, I may be forced to turn off the TV.

Suddenly I’m seeing Shelley Long and Rhea Perlman in a torrid lesbian affair.

I’m telling the therapist to bill you, you know.

If Ellen DeGeneres plays the shrink, I’m off the hook.

Well, I guess it’s nice that someone can change their sexuality, have some floppy movies, publicly go off the deep end, change their sexuality again and still get a TV series.

I’m not going to watch it but good for her!

I wish I could remember who referred to her a while back as “former part-time lesbian Anne Heche” but of course that’s the phrase that pops into my head every time I see her now.

And no, I won’t be watching her show.

Me neither. I don’t usually let an actor’s personal history deter me if they’re in something decent, but in her case, I’ll make an exception. How’d she get that gig anyway?

If she starts as Shelley Long, fine. If, by the grace of God, she finishes as Shelley Winters, so much the better for us all.

You’re not the first person who’s made this comparison. I remember reading a review of Six Days, Seven Nights that said Heche sounded just like Long when she got upset.

I haven’t seen Heche’s new series but I did see her on Letterman Thursday night and it seemed apparent she still doesn’t have both oars in the water. In fact, for a few moments during the interview looked like she was heading toward Farrah Fawcett territory but eventually she pulled back. However, Dave did look uncomfortable for a few seconds.

Getting back to Ann Heche/Shelley Long comparisons, other than the fact they’re both blond, I don’t think the match is that close. Heche is shorter, has a more nasal voice, and a different nose than Long. Also, even though Long has come across as a bit unhinged at times, Heche far outstrips her in the “strange behavior” category.

The only way Heche could truly be the Shelley Long of the new millennium is if she quits “Men in Trees” for an unsuccessful second attempt at a movie career* Of course, this is contingent on “Men in Trees” being a success which, at this time, seems unlikely.

  • And is replaced by the Kirstie Alley for the new millennium.

Katie Holmes?

I was wondering how much of that Letterman interview was set up in advance. You know, something like “ask Anne about her lesbian period so we can get past it”.

I saw the Men in Trees premiere on Tuesday. It seemed to be half Sex and the City, half Northern Exposure, and about a quarter as good as either of those series. So you have a good reason not to watch other than the personality of the star.

It’s not the physical resemblance so much as the vibe of high neurosis – and I’m thinking more of the characters (specifically Diane Chambers and … Marin? WTF?), rather than the personae of the actresses.

I didn’t hate this show. I’ll probably keep watching it till they cancel it, which will probably be in a week or two.

Ann Heche reminds me more of a Sandy Duncan.

Yes! I read something about her years ago that made me dislike her as well. I think it was a privileged attitude with underlings. I remember going touche! when one of the slaves spit in her food in Roots (even if she didn’t really eat the food).

The only other actress I avoid is Sharon Stone, because of a nasty comment she made about Dwight Yoakam after they split. He had nothing but nice things to say about her, and she called him a “dirt sandwich.” Bitch.

Is “plutosexual” a word yet?

That kind of raises the topic of comparing the actresses’ personae with their respective characters. Shelley Long’s personality and Diane Chamber’s personality seemed so thoroughly intermingled that you could not tell where her character left off and the real person began. Heche, on the other hand, has had so many public displays of weirdness that no matter how highly neurotic her TV character gets, she’ll still seem as sober as Madilyn Albright in comparison.
