Ann Meara dead at 85.

Link.

Married to Jerry for 61 years.

Wow.

RIP Ann. I remember you fondly from my youth.

Ann Meara Dies

(FTFY)

I liked her.

Aw. RIP Anne.

Sad news. She was a fine comic actress.

She actually got her start as an equity actress in my home town in 1948. My father even dated her once, but it didn’t work out.

Yeah, sadness. She and Jerry were hilarious.

Mary Elizabeth meets Herschel

I started this Thread four and a half years ago when Stiller & Meara started a webseries.
She never stopped being funny.
One of my favorites.

I’m so sorry to hear this. She was both reliably funny and also a skillful dramatic actress. Condolences to all her family and friends.

Aw, she was so sweet. RIP Anne. You always made me smile.

Awww. RIP, Ann. You had so much talent and beauty.

Anybody who ever appeared on ALF is A-O-K in my book. RIP, Anne.

I first saw here on the spin off Archie Bunker’s Place. Playing a character that stood up to Archie and told him he was wrong. Much like Rob Reiner’s famous character, but Ann didn’t get nearly as angry and loud. She got an Emmy nomination for that role.

Since then I tried to watch practically any show that she appeared in. A Very good comedian and actress. Amazing that she’s continued working almost to the end.

It’s great that she and Jerry had such a long marriage. Pretty amazing because marriage and a career together has split up other couples. They always seemed meant to be together.

R.I.P. Ann

She did. I was shooting an after-school special on 1st Amendment Rights and Freedom of Speech. She was in it. ( Unsure if she was the teacher or Principal ).

Anyway. Anne was not one to hide out in her trailer. Lunch was called and- as is tradition- crew goes through the line first. She got in line and got her food and some dessert. And came and sat down with me and a few other crew members. And laughed and told stories, and listened to us talk. She genuinely enjoyed being a part of the group- she didn’t sit down to hold court or monopoilize the chat.

The food was pretty good and the desserts were an obscenity of size. I was sitting next to her ( and had already shown her photos of my infant kids. Much kvelling. ) She nudges my elbow and says here, eat some of this. It’s amazing. I declined and she just smiled and said, c’mon. It’s huge- share some with me. So I did.

Her acting chops were something to bear witness to. I would stand there next to the Steadicam, waiting to put it on. Watching her silently walk her path and do her lines. Her expressions were beautiful. She was trying on different reads. Feeling the pace and tone of her lines. Working it out. I’ve rarely watched someone finesse their performance that way on set. Alone yet surrounded.

A bunch of years later, I got hired to work on a lovely little NY movie called “A Fish In The Bathtub”, written and directed by Joan Micklin Silver. Anne and her husband Jerry starred in it as a husband and wife. They played a couple that separated after a bitter fight right near the start of the film and reunite only at the end. I got to do a handful of days of work including the big party/dance scene where they reunite.

That was a very special day - one I have cherished since I shot it. Not only was it enormously challenging as far as the Steadicam work went, but I got to watch the two of them at work.

I got there early. Knew it was a big day for the crew. Set up my gear, did my morning rituals of stretching. Was fiddling with the gear when Anne and Jerry arrived. This scene was shot at the Forest Hills Jewish Center in Rego Park, NY on Queens Boulevard. Not ones to stand on ceremony, Anne and Jerry stepped out of the yellow cab they’d hailed in Manhatten for the ride out to Queens.

As Anne walked past me, she stopped and said, " Hey you ! You’re the camera guy with the crazy thing on your body- that thing- there !" Went over, said my name to her ( NEVER assume someone remembers your name ) and she gave me a hug. Jerry was standing there with his garmet bag. She turned and said, " Jer, this young man worked on the freedom of speech thing remember? The school out in Jersey? Oh he’s a lovely kid. He runs around with this camera body thing! " Jerry gave me a hiya and went to find his dressing area. I beamed. She laughed and waltzed away.

That, to me, was Anne. Generous, gregarious, intensely gifted and focused as an artist. When it came time to shoot “the big scene”, they were both prepared and the dance scene went off very well. Complex work for me- the only time in 28 years of Steadicam work that I ever allowed a 1st Assistant Director to literally guide my body as I moved. It was the only safe way to get the shots. Turned out to be a wonderful method.

The emotionally laden moments between Anne and Jerry did not involve me. The ballroom filled with extras remained, but aside from the immediate camera and sound crew, everyone else stepped out to minimize the eyes on them.

As they played their tender heart-breaking moments, many of us watching the video monitor were in tears. I was. Here was a supremely professional team, a married couple, performing difficult marriage material. We did a few takes and after each take they stepped back and turned away, keeping whatever was happening between them emotionally as a private thing. As it should have been.

It was a rare honor, watching that kind of thing unfold. When we got the last good take and Joan wrapped us, we all went back in and applauded them both.

Anne, you were a real mensch. Thank you for reminding me what very very good deep honest acting work is like to witness.

And thanks for sharing your dessert with me.

She and Jerry were on TV as long as I can remember, but (since we had a B/W TV until the early 1970s), I never knew she was a redhead until I saw a picture of her in TV Guide.

I also remember she and Jerry were in safety belt PSAs in the early 1970s. She didn’t want to wear one. He explained why she had to.

Cartooniverse, thank you.

I always liked Ann as a performer, and reading the various tributes to her, I’ve realized she’s one of the only celebrities about whom I’ve never heard anything negative. Not a thing. That’s so rare.
