Anne Heche: Actress, lost soul, burn victim [Update: She has passed]

One of the reasons I checked the box authorizing organ donation is because it’s reassuring to know that organ donation WILL kill me: that is, it will rapidly and incontrovertibly complete my process of dying. I get to skip all the dragging out the inevitable, and irrational fears that brain-dead people might still have some capacity for consciousness or suffering at some primal level.

Nope, I want it to be “Oops, there goes Kimstu, we could put her on a ventilator but she’s not coming back.” “Okay then, start taking her apart, and hurry up about it.” Co-signed, thanks, Doc!

Spring, at that Midwestern hospital, was the biggest season for organ donors, because of all the people who wrecked on their all-terrain vehicles.

Considering some of the high emotions earlier in the thread, I figured I’d post this update that came across my news feed today.

The article is so short the onebox pretty much covers it, but there were inactive traces of drugs in her system (cocaine and cannabinoids) that showed prior use, none were found to have been in effect at the time of the accident. Fentanyl was detected, but was administered in the hospital.

Not a hater or a fan, but figured the thread should have this information. Fighting ignorance and all.

I recently read a book called Life’s edge by Carl Zimmer - a series of essays on what it means to be alive. It had a lengthy discussion on the development of different theories of what constitutes “death” in the medical and legal communities - and the problems with various approaches.

And the LA Times reported she was not impaired by alcohol, either.

A rational person doesn’t drive through a residential neighborhood at high speed wreck, flee at even higher speeds, and crash into a house. The homeowner came close to being killed.

I won’t speculate why anyone would needlessly drive like that. We know now it wasn’t drugs or alcohol.

Heche was a troubled soul.
