Anybody read the fine print ads lately? It seems the whole recording industry is being sued, by some saintly lawyers…on behalf of us rubes who are so stupid that we overpaid for our tapes, records, CDs, etc.!
If YOU bought ANY of the above (from 1985 onwards) YOU may be entitled TO RECOVER! About $76 million has been extorted to date, but get this! If TOO MANY VICTIMS apply, the whole kitty (minus what the lawyers have swiped) gets donated to charity! Evidently the lawyesr have determined that if the average victim is due LESS than $5.00, then it makes more sense to donate the haul to charity.
Damn, at this season of the year, it feels good that we have such high-minded lawyers looking out for us!
link?
This sounds a lot like a class-action lawsuit that was filed against (IIRC) Chase credit card company regarding questionable late fee charges. My share of the settlement was something in the $0.35-$0.80 range, and I actually received a check for under a dollar.
As I keep telling my wife, I’m in the wrong line of work.
Feh, I’m still waiting for the class-action suit to recover the “Piracy tax” I’ve payed for blank cd’s.
All of my archived material is either in the public domain, or my own work. Fuckers.
So ralph124c, are you mad because you feel the defendants did NOT conspire “to illegally raise the prices of prerecorded Music Products by implementing Minimum Advertised Price policies, in violation of State and Federal laws”, or are you mad about the charity thing? Or both?
Do all blank CDs have this charge in Canada? Here in the US we can go to done to Fry’s or Comp USA and buy a 50 blank CDs for about $20. Or we can go to Tower and buy a music one for a good deal more. I am not sure if there is even a difference between the two. Can you order them from the states for less?
gazpacho, yup, and most other recording media as well. It’s set to go up considerably in 2003, too.
Details on the varying surcharges for different media here Freaking crazy!
I hadn’t considered taking the trouble to order from the U.S. – I assume that it would be legal – it would almost certainly be a violation of one of the free trade agreements we have with y’all to prohibit it.
I’m surprised that the U.S. doesn’t have anything like this, what with the balls the RIAA has.
I think ralph was just mad because there were some lawyers involved in this, which necessarily means it’s all a big evil extortionism scheme and couldn’t possibly have any merit whatsoever.
