Why do I envision Dopers, as a whole, as homely, socially inept shut-ins, hanging around the house with their cats? This is obviously a fallacy, and this thread proves that in a big way…

Oh yeah…you’ve seen the close-up bloodied photo of me. It was a metal divider, the kind that you see on American highways. Ya know, like those metal guard rails on the side of the road, except it was two of them in the middle. Anyhow, we had just been leaving the scene of a rather spectacular (but surprisingly injury-free) accident when some car (maybe an Audi) wiped out at about 90 mph and bashed into the median. The jaws of life had to be whipped out and all that.

At any rate, I was just leaving the scene, finally content with a job well done, plenty of material for the Car and Driver story and was heading back to the Audi A8 police car, which was on the other side of the highway. As I climbed atop the divider, one of my cameras swung forward, causing me to lose my balance. Now, I had a big camera bag on my left shoulder, a camera with a wide-angle lens hung around my neck, and another camera with an 80-200 swung across my right shoulder. I wasn’t in a good position to regain my balance. If I swung my arms forward to break my fall, all my gear would have gone flying. So I did what any sensible photographer would do: crash head first into the ground.

However, the camera around my neck decided to “break” my fall and my forehead impacted with the metal lens hood on my wide-angle. I got up, slightly dizzy, cameras intact, greeted by the sight of two concerned Autobahnpolizei, the reporter (Zoltan), and spurts of blood intermittenly shooting out of my skull.

It only required three stitches, but that’s the only three stitches I’ve ever gotten in my life. At any rate, it added to the drama in the story, and it got my picture in a major national publication.
