another moron co-worker...

A new hire at our valet department had a situation and ran it by me, his immediate supervisor:

"Boss, I parked this minivan upstairs in the VIP area…surveyed the damage on the rear bumper, locked it up nice and tight…

…oh, by the way, there were four children still in the van. Is that all right?"

Hold on… did he damage the van while parking, or document that the van was damaged before he touched it?

The kids? I say if the parents left them in the van, what’s he supposed to do? Lock them up somewhere else?

I would probably be a very bad parking attendant.

Live children?

Well, for now. How hot is it there?

So??? Was it all right?

More seriously, didja call the authorities (on the parents, not the co-worker. As far as I know, the simple fact of being a moron is not in and of itself a crime…)

I don’t know if I’d call him moron based on that. If he’s a young guy who isn’t very experienced in the ways of the world or looking after children, he might not have the first clue about kids in cars. At least he asked someone about them.

The situation with the kids is weird, but maybe one kid was old enough to look after the others. I don’t know how that goes these days; our parents used to leave us in the car alone, but only after we were old enough to know to crack a window or get out if the car got too hot.

What’s the problem, they were parked inthe VIP area.

I’d echo **featherlou ** on this. At least he had the sense to keep them contained somewhere secure while he sought advice.

Let me elaborate:

The VIP area is the lower level of our valet garage: not so far to drive, so VIPs get their cars quicker when they want them.
The garage is nothing more than astorage area to warehouse your vehicle while you stay at our hotel and gamble in our casino.

The temps were in the 60s, so there were no issues of being too hot/cold for the children.

The children were waiting in the car while mom and dad were upstairs checking in to their rooms.

So, umm… what should he have done, called the cops?

I’m not getting this part:

What exactly was he doing? Parking cars or surveying damage? If he was parking cars and the kids were waiting for the parents to check in, why was he surveying damage? If his job was to survey damage to vehicles, and he found kids inside, why didn’t you advise him to call the police? I’m very confused here.

I’m guessing a valet surveys damage on a vehicle when it comes into the garage so they can’t be accused of causing it.

But the scenario is weird, I’ll give you that.

Yes, we take a walk around the vehicle taking note of every scratch and dent and record it on the back of the ticket so later the owner can’t accuse us of causing damage that was already there.

The parents went upstairs to check in to the hotel and left the kids in the car to watch a DVD of Shreck or something so they wouldn’t get bored waiting around.
