The present Pope has long been keen on beatifying then canonising one of his predecessors, Pius XII. There has been considerable controversy about the then Pope’s alleged anti-semitism and the adequacy of his efforts during the War.
Now there are claims (Haaretz, Jerusalem Post, Guardian, Independent, The Age and only a few others at present AFAICT], originally published in an Italian newspaper (Corriere della Sera) that Pius XII attempted to prevent child survivors of the Holocaust being returned to their parents. Amongst other things:
What do people make of this? How reliable is the information? Is this a revelation, or just confirmation of what was already widely surmised? How damning is this? - it seems pretty jaw-dropping to me. To what extent is the (purported) publication of the then future Pope John XXIII’s diaries itself a factional move within the Church?
I’m not a religious person, so I tend to see some of these developments in crude political terms (please excuse or correct me to the extent you think appropriate). It seems to me that John Paul II’s desire to canonise Pius XII is largely an attempt to make an anti- Second Vatican Council statement. If this latest revelation is true, can the game be worth the cost? It seems like associating with Pius XII’s views and actions comes with some very ugly baggage.
