A “40 second” schoolyard beating that left the victim with “bruises and scrapes.” This is meaningless for all except those closely involved. It would be just as meaningless if it was six white kids beating up a black kid.
This is total non-news. Hell, I was on the receiving end of worse than this in 9th grade.

Why would you think I was joking? It’s perfectly reasonable to abhor racism and violence directed at blacks while at the same time supporting racism and violence by blacks. That’s why I, like most white people, am strongly in favor of federal assistance to fund outreach programs to educate and inform black youths on the benefits to their self-image and position in society of kicking a white guy hard in the nuts. It just seems like the right thing to do.

If you looked at it overly you would certainly have thought “Hmm, there’s like five Asian kids in the whole school and here’s these three big ol’ black girls beating up on one of them. MUST BE RACISM!”
But in fact, they beat up every new girl. It was just their thing. (And it was one of the reasons my parents transferred me to a new school!)

A family moves into a new neighborhood from out of state. Their son (who happens to be white) starts high school and is beaten up by a group of neighborhood bullies (who happen to be black) on the way home from school. All involved live in a primarily black neighborhood (the Ocean View section of Norfolk, VA).
So, OP, how has this been underreported by the media, since I have seen this on the local news and read it in the paper (see my and OneCent’s links to the online version of the paper) everyday since the video photographer sent in his tape to the television stations?
It means the victim could have instigated the whole thing- not bloody likely, but without context, who knows.
Personally I don’t think its news because this type thing probably happens every day in schools across the country, with all races as both perps and victims. If they were screaming something about the Lousiana incident or doing or saying anything noteworthy it would be news. Beating up a fat new different race kid in school is not worthy of national attention. Without the noose and attempted murder charges, the Jena deal wouldn’t have been either.
How exactly do you come to the conclusion that I am “proud of being a racist”?
I entered Tennessee State University a proud liberal on race matters, thinking that whites and blacks had basically put most ill-feelings behind them, and found out differently.
I got told, “You do not belong here!” several times. I heard black students talking about beating up whites on numerous occasions. I conversed with quite a number of people who felt it was not really possible for a black to steal anything from a white – it is all just “payback”.
I got shoved down by this racist black behemoth. None of the people around (all black) did a thing to help.
If I tried to disagree with any of the black students about anything, I was shouted down as a racist.
I could go on and on, but I will stop for now.
Basically, I encountered a level of racial hostility that shattered a lot of illusions. I guess you could say that the experience rattled me to the core of my being and made me re-evaluate a lot of things about race. Now, I know that there are a lot of blacks who really hate white people. I know that not all blacks wish to harm whites, but a good number of them do!
What shocks me is that so many people on this board seem utterly terrified to acknowledge this fact. If a white gets attacked, he somehow deserves it, probably used racially abusive language, etc.
You opened a thread, linking to a racist web site, that further linked to the original story (at which point you could have easily dropped the racist website as an intermediary) and without expressing one jot or tittle of sympathy for the white kid, you yelled “racism!” “double standard!” even though there was sufficient evidence (from an additional link on the original news story’s page) that the police had actually started an investigation that was still not turning up racism (and the fact that the news media had two stories on the topic disproved your "double standard’ from the get go).
I feel sorry for the kid, but this thread, in the Pit, is about double standards and racism–which is how you framed the discussion with a racist link and an inadequate reading of the news.
Obviously, at this point I’m not going to express any sympathy for you, either.
