I’m Gleyven on Silver Hand a 19th level warlock
Another Silver Hand player here. Audhum, lvl 46 Tauren Hunter.
LOL, I do most of my stuff solo, as I usually am targetting for specific quests, or am after specific tradeskill items, so I am not as intent on leveling as many people. I have a friends list of people I will group with, but you do have to be careful about grouping. It isnt as bad as it was in beta test with all the battlenet babies playing for free [beta tests are free accounts, so you get a lot of idiots]
I dont mind dying if it wasnt through someone being a total idiot and not listening to advice, or not doing their job. As a rogue, you wont have half the problem we have as druids. We are jacks of all trades and masters of none [except self transformation=)] We get tagged for a group for healing, but we arent the best healers. We get involved for the buffing, which is ok, we do have 2 decent buffs, a short damage shield, and a longer term ac buff. What we dont do well is combine nuking and dps with healing. I can either do my best to keep someone alive, or I can tank and keep myself healed, and keep the debuffs [faerie, an ac reducer, and moonfire, a damage over time, and if outside a damage causing root]. I cant do them all, and I have gotten yelled at for not being able to do everything at one time=\
You really do need to settle how looting is going to happen up front, people need to share. unless it is a group of guildies, everything is up for grabs for everybody as far as I am concerned. I may not be able to wear mail, but i can sell it and upgrade something I need!
speaking of which, rob is in an armor making mood again, beware the mail system=)
OK, next time I am in game at the same time I will invite you=)
Hm, hope the GM gets back to you soon…i love waterform=)
We can get together and work on strategies, but honestly I use a pretty typical spellset - root, faerie, damage over time and wait for root to wear off, then whack them when they run at me=) and try not to deal with more than one mob at a time=) I have them set up so I ‘countdown’ on the keyboard, #6,5,4 … 1[autoattack] then wait for them to come at me=) I will re debuff and re damage over time during a fight, but am more concerned with keeping myself healed up=)
We’ve had unfortunate experiences with groups or certain players too, but by and large, most have been good experiences.
I don’t put up with the people who “cowboy” it for too long. I just leave the group. Some of the players just don’t understand strategy, I guess. I get irritated if I’m continuously killed due to someone cowboying it up and constantly running ahead to aggro the monsters. Fortunately, if we hook up with our guild members, most are good team players and we use each other’s strengths to get through the quest at hand. I have no problem helping lower level players get through their quests (explains why I’m still only level 32), but I have to admit there are times I want to progress and build up my skills. So, I usually take a bit of time to do some mining and blacksmithing on my own.
My daughter plays lvl 28 Tauren druid on Kilrogg. Her character name is Lynette. My son is a lvl 40 dwarf pally on Proudmoore, character name Mentall.
Hopefully I’ll run into one of you one day on Proudmoore!
Yesterday was frustrating. I’m working on quests for my 16th lvl druid, and I need 3 Grizzled Scalps from Grizzled Thistle Bears in Darkshore. !%@! things won’t drop scalps as loot, even though I killed 3 of them. And it’s not like these bears are the most common monsters in the area. Gah.
Ah, well. I’ll be back on tonight to try again. At least I’m getting decent amounts of experience.
I just got my (european version) in the post today, will be trying it out after the weekend (visiting relatives up north first). Any advice for starting out would be appreciated, character race and class choices etc. To narrow the advice a bit, I want to avoid PvP (this is a must, promotes an atmosphere I dislike) and am likely to spend most of my time on my own rather than as part of a group. My primary enjoyment of the game will probably be from wandering about the place looking at all the cool stuff.
Avoiding PvP is easy. Just make sure you don’t end up on a PvP-designated server. On any Normal or RP server, PvP can only be entered by either going to a major city of the opposing faction or attacking opposing faction NPCs deliberately. So you should be fine there.
As for starting a character, it depends on how you want to play. All classes have their strengths and weaknesses. Some are better at supporting other players, some are front-line combatants. Any character can get along by themselves or within a group, though. You just need to figure out how to compensate for the weaknesses you have. Playing with groups can be a lot of fun or frustrating, depending on the people you end up working with. It’s always good to keep track of people you have a good time with.
I picked a druid to play first because I found the concept of shapeshifting pretty nifty, and because druids are very well-rounded. Since the class is pretty self-sufficient, I could either play solo or with people as I chose. Most of my time has been solo, but that’s changing as play more. I created my warrior to see how a more straight-forward melee class worked, and because there seemed to be a shortage of them. I really liked the image of a big minotaur weilding a huge axe, too.
So that’s my take on it.
I’m on Elune as well, though I’m already in a 7+ year-old multi-game guild I’ve been a part of for oh, almost 4 years now. I’ll have to remember to add sdmb to my channel autojoins next time I log in. =)
Cerridanae is my 40th lvl warlock, Karii is my 20th lvl mage, and Aliandra is my 24th lvl hunter. =)
Does anyone else use thottbot? (www.thottbot.com) Gives drop percentages and locations, etc.
I love it.
(It works by using Cosmos, a UI mod, to gather data about what people kill)
Thottbot is good for somethings, but I mainly use allakhazam.com, with occasional use of wowvault.
I play on Earthen Ring (RP, non-PvP). I have several characters in both Alliance and Horde. The main ones are Azyl (47 NE Hunter), Azokk (27 Tauren Shaman), and Azin (22 Undead Warlock).
We use Thottbot, but for UI mods, we use CTMod.
Sylesand, 43 female NE hunter on Medivh
Zoriz, 9 female troll mage on Windrunner
velveeta and her husband also play on Medivh.
Rogueracer, what level of RP happens on Earthen Ring? Do people stay in character even on channel? I’ve contemplated the RP servers, but I’m not sure how things generally work there.
We’ve used thottbot a couple of times when lost and trying to figure out where to go to finish a quest.
Cosmos quit working with the patch a few days ago. I really miss being able to tell the level of the quests. Since I play alone mostly, I really don’t care to try quests that are over the characters level. We can’t figure out how to take it off, now that it doesn’t work anyway. Any ideas?
I don’t have too much to add other than I didn’t want to get the game in the first place, because of time/business/school, then a friend purchased it for me for Christmas (I was happy, but I shuddered because of my compulsive nature - I immediately signed up for 6 months)
I now play a lvl 33 Troll Priest (Boneeter) on Dethecus. I am really, really enjoying it. I run around taking screenshots all the time of interesting things, and sharing them with friends. I also started a guild which now has 67 members and climbing. We are all low level, but we help each other out.
The biggest problem is time - people are lapping me in levels and I feel a constant pressure to level, when all I want to do is explore. Too bad, since they did such a wonderful job of making each area had a different feel and look.
I thought the story of the valentine - I wish I thought of that - I would have sent my friends wife one just to piss him off They play all the time and love it.
I’m not a WoW player, but it sure is tempting from reading everyone’s in-game experiences. I’m too cheap though, and I don’t have a lot of free time these days.
Just thought I’d share an article I saw on Slashdot recently:
It seems Thottbot has some sinister ties. <cue dramatic music>
Oh, and I guess I should point out that the above link also implicates Cosmos. <cue more dramatic music>
First let me state that if anyone reading this is trying to pick a server and you are a jerk… ummm… Earthen Ring is not the server you are looking for… move along.
There, now that I have that out of the way… I haven’t played on a non-RP server, so I probably can’t give you a good comparison. I can mostly just speak for Earthen Ring. I picked a RP server because I wanted to distance myself as far as possible from what I would consider to be a typical “Battlenet kiddie”. I think it worked. Most of the l33t d00dz get bored with annoying the RPers and leave.
General chat is a mixture of roleplay and OOC. Most people will denote OOC chat in this channel with parentheses. About once a night there will be an argument in General chat about how it should all be OOC. The RPers usually (but not always) verbally beat the offender into submission. I’ve read that many people automatically turn General chat off. I’ve been playing on this server since the second day WoW went live and I was only tempted to do this once. The ignore list seems to work well for the few offenders.
A real life friend of mine played a lot of levels on another server (non-RP, non-PvP) before moving over to Earthen Ring about a month ago. He said he could definitely tell the difference and likes it much better.
As far as roleplaying overall, some people do and some don’t. There are dedicated roleplaying guilds. I will roleplay when I encounter a RPer, but mostly I play there because it seems like it attracts more of the type of players that I want to be around.
About the only other thing I can think of is PvP. I’ll mention this in case you decided to create a character on Earthen Ring, just so you know how things stand. When I was playing my hunter, it used to annoy me (in a “in character” sense, not for real) when the Horde would raid different areas of Ashenvale. How dare they? The guild my hunter is in finally got strong enough to start some raids on the Horde. One night we attacked the Crossroads and then moved on to the border between The Barrens and Ashenvale. After several large battles, we were finally defeated. I think a good time was had by both sides. It ended with players from each side standing around dueling each other. Considering we were trying to kill each other, it was quite friendly. I ended up getting completely owned by a shaman, so I decided to make one just to get some idea of what that class could do.
Now I play Horde much more than Alliance. I used to think it was bad how the Horde attacked the Alliance. I had no idea. The Alliance attacks are almost non-stop on the weekends. It seems like there is always a rogue or paladin attacking the Crossroads. I now feel it’s my duty to get my shaman strong enough to help with the defense and repel the warmongering Alliance.
Sometimes when I’m bored I like to browse the other forum boards - I don’t suppose you’ve encountered a paladin called YoYo? He seems quite infamous on the boards.
I’m on Darkspear, and I’m a 48 undead priest. It’s a low/med population server, so I doubt any other Dopers are on.
