I have a job opportunity in Jackson Mississippi. I have visited once during the interview but didn’t really get a chance to see much of the area. Can anyone out there offer any comments, info or advice as far as relocating to Jackson?
I would be very appreciative. This is a tough decision and I need all the info I can get to make an informed choice.
Well, since your current location is nowhere, if you move to Jackson you’ll at least be somewhere. That may or may not be progress, depending on one’s point of view.
I believe the poster Nichol_storm lives near Jackson. If she doesn’t show up in this thread soon you might do a search and try e-mailing her.
I drove through Jackson once. Jackson is one of those cities that one seldom hears mentioned, either good or bad.
To quote Lucinda Williams: “There’s a good saloon in nearly every town”.
I lived there for a year, although technically that was the year that I lived in hotels and visited my apartment on weekends.
I actually lived just across the county line in Ridgeland - it’s basically the town to the north across County Line Road.
I liked Jackson. It’s the one town I’ve lived in since finishing college that I’d actually move back to - BUT, with my work life the way it was then, I didn’t have much of a social life and I can’t tell you a darn thing what there really is to do there.
I live in Raymond, a few minutes outside of Jackson. Jackson isn’t so bad, though there are a few places I wouldn’t drive through at night. As others said before, there’s next to no nightlife here, and if you’re moving from a big city like Chicago prepare to be shocked by how, well, non-urban it’ll appear. It’s not so bad for all that but there are far more beautiful places in the state to live, and if you have kids I’d suggest someplace like Clinton because the public schools are better.
I live outside of Jackson. E-mail me if you like, for particulars. I can point you out to best places to live, schools, etc.
I’ve lived here for 15 years. eh… not the best place i’ve ever lived, nor the worst. There are a lot of unseen things that make Mississiipi a great place.
Well, the Greyhound station sucks and they’ll send cops over to yell at you if you fall asleep at one of the tables in the dining section, even if you still have grits in front of you at the time. But if you live there you probably won’t have to spend four hours at the Greyhound station waiting for your connection because the bus system decided to send you from Columbus, MS to Longview, TX by way of Tuscaloosa, AL…
