It’s not my favourite US sitcom (that’s Frasier) but it was one of the best and funniest pieces of ensemble playing made anywhere, ever. Well drawn characters, all of whom were in some way flawed, but sympathetic and believable, without straying too far into parody. One of our digital channels has been showing re-runs this past year, and IMO it stands up very well. I’d be hard pushed to pick a favourite episode or anything, but there have been few funnier moments than George Wendt making his customary entrance and responding to a cry of “What’s shakin’, Norm?” with “All four cheeks and a couple of chins…”.
I don’t have a favourite episode, but I’ve often wondered who the prefered female was-- Diane Chambers or Rebecca Howe?
I thought that Kirstie Alley was better than Shelley Long, though I know I’m probably the minority on that.
I thought that they managed the transition between Diane and Rebecca very well (I assume Shelley Long just wanted out and it wasn’t planned?), and also the death of the actor who played Coach. No particular favourite though.
I preferred the earlier Kirstie Alley years. I think she tried to hard to be “funny” the last couple of years. Rebecca was a funnier character when she was at least trying to be normal.
As to the OP: yes, I still think Cheers is probably the best sitcom of all time.
One of my favorite episodes was rather atypical because most of it didn’t take place in the bar, it was when Sam and Diane are together and they go to have dinner at Frasier and Lillith’s. Multiple emotional scenes ensue, mostly because of the past relationship of Diane and Frasier. It ends with both women having locked themselves in the bathroom and Sam and Frasier going upstairs to watch “I, Claudius”. (Sam: “Great! I love gladiator flicks.”).
My favorite sitcom of all time. I still think of scenes I haven’t seen for like ten years or more and they still make me smile.
Still my all time favourite sitcom. Not just favourite episodes I had whole favourite seasons. Years ago I was away on business and on late night TV they had an episode of Cheers. I had already seen it of course but watched it and thoroughly enjoyed it. The next day I returned to Sydney and late that night sat down to watch an episode of Cheers. It was the same episode but it was still terrific entertainment. I have often said that I don’t think I have ever seen a comedy movie with as many consistent laughs as 4 or 5 consecutive episodes of Cheers.
Too hard to pick one favorite episode, but I always liked the ones involving the rivalry between Cheers and Gary’s. The episode with Cliff on Jeopardy is a classic.
It’s been a long time since I watched it, but I still remember the closing scene where Sam, who is resisting alcoholism, pours himself a drink, then throws it away.
Amid all the laughs, a touching moment.
Yes, that’s a good one
One of my favorites is when they all celebrate Thanksgiving at Carla’s home + the episode you mentions
I also like the “bar-wars” episodes a lot
Given that Cheers took second place (losing to The Simpsons) in this past March’s Sitocm March Madness, and the fact that the Favorite Cheers moments thread from last December ran to 3 pages, I’d say we do have some fans of Cheers out there. (I hesitate to link to it, not wanting to steal this thread’s thunder, but since the OP is a guest and can’t search, I thought he at least might appreciate it.)
As it happens, just last night I was watching the episode where Frazier goes snipe hunting. Not the best ever, by any means, but a good one, and notable for being the point where Frazier first really becomes part of the gang and we start to see the potential in his character.
I love Woody’s wedding, where everything went wrong. It’s either an hour episode or a two parter.
I love Cheers.
What comes to my mind is Diane’s last episode were she is called away after they had gone house shopping and as she leaves Sam says “Have a good life.” She comes back and assures him she’ll be back and he finally relents and she leaves. Sam again says sadly “Have a good life.”
The scenc with the two of them far older after a lifetime growing old together in the house they considered buying together is very touching.
Count me amoung the Cheers fans.
I love Cheers and think it’s held up wonderfully.
I remember a review of the final episode that said the writers must have been terribly fond of the Dianne Chambers character (not necessarily Shelley Long herself) because when she came back for the final episode, the writers wrote the part exactly as if she had been a member of the cast for all those years, and not as if she would be the designated villain or idiot.
