I used to love the one-day, one-deal site woot.com. But it’s long since gotten well beyond ‘one deal’ each day, and somewhere along the line I stopped checking it out each morning. These days it has daily deals in ten or twelve categories, plus it’s got about 75 links to a couple thousand ‘woot-plus’ deals at any time. Checking it out each morning became more of a chore than a fun thing, I guess.
So with that in mind, what are the alternatives? Are there any good ones? Anyone got any recommendations?
You’re right, I used to love woot, about 5 years ago, until they got bought out by some other online retailer who just used it as a marketing arm and rode the name to the bank.
Really, why else would somebody develop an online concept, except for the purpose of selling out to one of the giants eagerly waiting to gobble it up and eliminate it from the competition.
Thanks for the link! I just clicked over; it looks worth a try.
Which explains why Woot is the way it now is.
It’s the dream of every little boy or girl to grow up and develop an app or website or social medium that Amazon or Google or Microsoft or Apple will buy for billions. And then ruin, but the billions will ease their heartbreak.
The one thing I will miss about Woot is the t-shirts, of which I’ve got a couple dozen. But in the last several months before I stopped checking Woot at all, I’d noticed that hardly any of the new shirts particularly grabbed my interest.
Maybe the people who were designing the best t-shirts also got tired of Woot.
Besides being bought out by Amazon, the other killer of Woot was its own success. They used to sell 81 copies of some video card, at a decent cost. But today, Woot is just to popular to bother with those small lots of odd and ends. They’d be sold out in about an hour, and the site would be empty for the rest of the day.
