Any interest in an Atlanta Dopefest this summer?

Well, if you had showed up at Red Top, then you’d know what happened there.

My lips are sealed.

I’m In!!!

I think the 12th oughtta work for me as well–I’ll need a good shot ‘o’ hooch after moving (and hopefully unpacking).

Although, while I’m grateful for the honor, I’m a little concerned with all the “Triplerfest” monikers and offers for free beer floating around. I don’t want to be known as “that oh-so-high-and-mighty, bitchy Diva who got his own Dopefest.”

Tripler
Woo!! Look at me! I’m a drunken Diva!! WHERE’S MY FUCKIN’ TIARA?!?

The Seattle dopers threw a “swampfest” for me, so I figure we can throw a “Triplerfest” for you. So, do you prefer rubies or diamonds in your Tiara?

Hey, swampy, will you give Tripler a big ol’ wet sloppy kiss from me? Or a nice friendly hug, or a slightly awkward, shy glance? 'Cause I think he’s kinda cool even tho I don’t much interact with him, and I don’t expect he’ll find himself in southern Merrylande any time soon.

There better be pics of said Fest!!

OK then, screw you.

In Atlanta, you buy Bean beer!

OMG - I have to go buy an autograph book so that the soon to be rich and famous author Sampiro can sign for me (will not sell on Ebay no matter how valuable the signature).

OMG - I’m going to meet some wonderful, caring, intelligent, and kind people (and some Republicans too - just a joke - just a joke) too. This is great.
I’m really looking forward to my first Dopefest! Do we each contribute a certain amount? Do we run individual tabs? Is it BYOB? Please, let a newbie know.

I say run individual tabs. That way people can eat and drink to their budget. Anybody got a suggestion for a place to meet? Are we talking Buckhead, Druid Hills, Midtown, or what?

I wanna be there! But can’t commit just yet. I’m trying to have gastric bypass surgery, but I won’t know when my surgery date is until my surgeon comes back from visiting his mama. No, seriously. He’s gone home until mid-July, and I’m trying not to rethink the whole “Surgery… in Montgomery?” thing. :smack: I’ll hopefully be under the knife sometime in the next six weeks. So even if I can’t make it, you’ll know I’d rather be with y’all!

Individual tabs is the way to go. Rez you know any really good meet up places in Midtown or Buckhead? Preferably near hotels. If this is what we decide on, I’m gonna need a hotel room cause I’m way down in south Jawja and all. Do we want to do something besides eat, drink and cause general mayhem and havoc?

DeVena it’d be great to see ya if you can but I understand about the surgery thingy. Good luck. Maybe you can send DaBeast brother instead?

Sampiro you started this idea. What say you on meeting up where and what and all? I threw out August 12th as a date just to get us thinking. We do not have to be tied to just that date unless it’s an ok one for most folks.

Jali dopefests be fun! I mean getting to hang out with total strangers from an internet message board that seem ok, or at least probably are not serial killers or given to yankin’ their clothes off in public as far as anyone can tell… what’s not to like!

If Buckhead is anything like it was when I lived in Atlanta in the early '80s, it’s expensive. I’d rather find a cheap hotel so I can save all my money for booze. And maybe some food. i promise not to bring any cats.

As for something to do other than eat and drink (as if that isn’t enough) if we are in the area SciTek is a science/technology museum that is loads of fun. Hands on exhibits and stuff. Heck, I don’t even know if it is still there.

**38 Special **is playing in Duluth on August 18th…

Holy Crap!! I have been lured back into the dope! It seems like years since I’ve been here… love what ya’ve done wit’ the place…
Anywho… pencil me in! Sounds like a HOOOOOT!

I don’t really know that much about Atlanta restaurants to be honest. My ex-boyfriend (with whom I’m on super good terms- no awkwardness at all in seeing him) works at a place on Piedmont called Cowtippers that’s pretty good- it’s just a steak & burger place with a bar, moderately priced (burgers are big and good and under $10, steaks higher obviously); I recommend it because it’s not expensive, the food’s decent and it’s one of the few places I know (and while I’m not cheap when it comes to good food/good atmosphere, I HATE paying $30 for a meal and $10 to park like you have to in Buckhead in order to get a meal that was no better than the $10 meal down at the place with free parking would have been).

I’m totally not married to it though- if you want to change it that’s totally fine. As far as date, I work every other Saturday but I’m always off on Sundays, but I’m somewhat flexible as long as it’s a weekend.

I’ll be in Montgomery starting in late July- we can have our own mini-fest at Sinclairs or something (and it might be better if you wait til after to have the bypass! :))

Also about COWTIPPERS- it has a patio area in case anybody’s a smoker. (Atlanta’s smoke-free indoors at all restaurants.) It’s hardly the only one to do this and it’s not a dealbreaker, but just sayin… (I don’t know who’s a smoker here).

I’m far too new to respond to this thread. But I do know sort of a lot about Atlanta bars and restaurants. My own information is about two years old (as I moved overseas two years ago) but my brother was a chef in Atlanta and keeps up with it for me.

So for whatever it’s worth:

If it isn’t for the food but for a place to sit and drink and chat and eat more or less mediocre food (it’s not bad food, it just isn’t anything to sit in traffic for) I might consider (along with Cowtipper’s) Manuel’s Tavern. Or the Park Tavern for outside. Park tavern has a better setting; Manuel’s has cheap beer. Apres Diem is also nice for out of doors, and coffee drinks, booze, and cakes and pies. I am not wild for their regular food menu though it is also okay. At Apres Diem you can get the “far lounge” for a group for no extra cost. And the art is nice usually. Taco Mac of course. Atkins Park, though the food there is quite good I think (My brother thinks it’s boring).

For restaurants I was fond of Hal’s on Old Ivy, Fellini’s Pizza, Watershed, and both Nam and Pho (I like Vietnamese, lol) right off the top of my head. And lot of very local places, but I’m leavign those out because if it’s a restaurant y’all want, a little more brainstorming will be necessary as there are a lot of options.

I used to go to Manuels Tavern a lot when I was in grad school - cheap beer. Lousy atmosphere, but with Dopers around that won’t be a problem.

I’m in.

Also, just to throw an option out there. If you guys would like to do a BBQ thing by the pool, I’d be happy to host. But it would have to move a little south to Columbus.

I love all bars and clubs, too, so it doesn’t matter to me.

First, Bear_Nenno, it’d be icing on the cake for me to finally meet my younger doper twin. For those of you who fail to keep up with the minutiae of my (and Bear_Nenno’s) life), and shame on you for it, since that’s what this place is for after all, we share the same birthday (July 29… and a shout out to our triplet sisters, Ayesha, EJ’sGirl and Kyla).

Second, we have two suggestions, Cowtipper’s (brings back so many childhood and adolescent memories  ) and Manuel’s. Both sound great to me! I’m all for good (and cheap) food and beer. What say you other interested parties?

No, I am not taking charge of this thing, I just really want it to happen. Other suggestions are still welcome. Ok, I am all for this being an “adult” doper gathering. I just wanna party with me some southern dopers. And, of course, all others who care to join us.
