OK, so now who's up for an Atlanta (area) pic-a-nic fest?

I had a great time at Cowtipper’s the other night, but it was a bummer not to be able to talk more with the folks I hadn’t met before. We had a really fun 'fest two years ago at Red Top State Park, so I’d like to propose another gathering like that one, maybe one weekend next month. We had a picnic shelter right on the lake, and played music and talked and generally had a fine time. There’s a lodge, campsites, and even a yurt (we rented this last time, and it was awesome) for overnight stays, and it’s within easy driving distance for those who are local to Atlanta. I’m open to other locations, too, just suggesting Red Top again since it worked out so well last time.

So, whadda y’all say?

I say “I wish there were two of me”. :frowning:
We also had a wonderful time at Red Top, and I wish we were in a position to visit again.

sigh

proposal. Red Top was next on my list of parks to explore, too. I’d be coming from NE OTP, but as I’m in a 2-seater truck, my offer to car-pool would be exclusive, to say the least.

(I feed these hamsters four cents a day and they still eat my posts!)

I regretfully could not attend the evening in Atlanta, and would love to meet with any of you who would like the new and improved Dopefest (now with added Slithy Tove)

I’m in!

What can I bring?

Since I missed the Atlanta Dopefest, I would like to try this one! If my schedule permits, of course.

Um, I’ve got a four-seater, so I can rendezvous anywhere someone needs a ride. Also, if desired, I can bring firewood to recreate my fire-buildin’ skills as demonstrated at PorkDope '02.

Are we overnighting up there, or is this a daytime trip? I’d hate to not camp out in such a beautiful area. . .

Tripler
I’ve got computer hacking skills, bo staff skills, arsonist skills. . .

Last time around, we rented the yurt (as I mentioned in my OP, it was awesome), and I think somebody else had a cabin; I can’t remember if anybody else stayed over, but that’s one of the big pluses of having it at one of the parks. UncleBill and I will most likely make it a day trip, on accounta the monkeys, but the campground is nice–we camped there on another trip, and if you can get there early enough and stake out one of the sites right on the lake, it’s really cool. Though the boats tend to start up early in the morning, which screws with sleeping in.

If we’re gonna do this, let’s get a weekend picked as soon as possible, so we can reserve a picnic shelter (the cool one that’s way out at the end, on a little almost-island, I just checked the availability, and it’s booked until mid-October, so foo, but the others are still nice) and those who want to camp can reserve a site–you can do that on the website, which is very cool.

So, when’s good/bad for everybody? We’re out Labor Day weekend (that’s a busy weekend anyway) but I think we’re free otherwise until late October.

Sweet, that’s really close to my house! We’re in any weekend except for Labor Day and the weekend of September 23, when we will be out of town.

I’m pretty flexible (Semper Gumby!), so you tell me when we throw the shin-dig, and I’ll make sure I’m there. I will personally promise a damned good campfire (however, s’mores are on your own).

And if someone brings a guitar, I promise I’ll bring a harmonica.

Oh, and I forgot to say: I’ll happily offer my canoe for day trips to anyone interested! (assuming it arrives in time). It’s a 16’-er, and will easily take two Dopers and their gear or three for the trip.

And on that note, I just might consider parking on one side of the lake, and paddlin’ to the campsite.

The Red Top Mtn. do was pretty fun! I’d definitely be up for that again! And Tripler has a canoe??? I heart canoes.

I have come to believe that I am the end-all, be-all of any Doper’s strange, esoteric needs. “Got a 3/4” 20-pitch tap and die set?" Yep. “Got a 20A mig welder?” Yep. “Got a swiss seat that I can hop off a burning building with?” Yep. “Got jumper cables? My car died!” [sub]Ask GingerOfTheNorth[/sub] Yep. “I’m stuck in the snow. Can you get me out?”. The tow strap is in the toolbox–give me five minutes to pull it out and put my hitch onto my reciever. . .

And yes, I have a canoe.

Tripler
I’m the MacGuyver of the Straight Dope.

And that’s just one of the many reasons why we love you.

Oh, and I forgot to ask at the last dinner: Where’s my FCKIN’ tiara!!*

OK - I saw the hockey thread before this one, but oooohh, Red Top. I will be checking this one as well. I really missed the last fest. Got. To. Get. Away.

OK, here are possible dates and what’s available right now (you can see a map here for locations of the picnic shelters and everything else):

Saturday, Sep 9: No picnic shelters. Scratch that day for the picnic, though there are lodge rooms and campsites available that weekend.
Sun, Sep 10: Picnic shelters 1 thru 4 available.

Sat, Sep 16: Shelters 2-5; campsites available.
Sun, Sep 17: Shelters 1-6 available.

Sat, Sep 23: Shelter #4, Lodge suite, campsites available.
Sun, Sep 24: Shelters 1 and 3-6 available.

Sat, Sep 30: Shelters 3-5, campsites available.
Sun, Oct 1: Shelters 1-3, 5 and 7 available.

Thoughts?

We can’t make it September 23 or 24 because we will be out of town, nor could we make it September 16 because it will be Dominic’s birthday party that day. My vote is for September 30 because it won’t be so HOT by then.

offical vote: 9/30

I can’t do Sept. 10, but I don’t think I have anything on the other dates. 9/30 would work.

You people are just gonna MAKE me come to Red Top, aren’t ya ??!

BTW Geobabe, Hubby and I were the ones renting a cabin there for the last one. It was our official Honeymoon (a few months late). Do you s’pose we could call this an Anniversary trip ?
