A South-East Doper Picnic!

My sweet friend Archergal gave me this idea in a recent e-mail, and I must admit I find it very attractive!

What do y’all think? Sometime late Summer, perhaps? We’ll make a weekend of it, with music, cameraderie and laughs! (It will also give me an excuse to accompany Archergal on her fiddle/dulcimer/autoharp with my guitar!)

What say you, Teemsters? We’ll make a weekend of it. Bring the kiddos and let’s have some fun!

I can find the land for our picnic. We’ll just need some tent-covers, food , ice and y’all!

Q

I’m down. I’m guessing you’re talking Atlanta metro?

I think it sounds great. Throw out some dates and I’ll work around them. Atlanta area sound good to everyone?

rural metro Atlanta, kids!

If y’all wanna bring coolers with beer and stuff, it will need to be on private land outside Atlanta. I have a couple of people who would be happy to have us, and they would need to be assured that we would leave their property as we found it, but I do not think that will be a problem.

The only problem I see at the outset is the name Straight Dope Picnic. For some reason, the folks here in Paulding County consider Dope as… well… Dope! We might have to let the owners meet Archergal or the GeoBills, or any of the nice folks who got together for the last Dopefest! For that matter, any of you sweet peoples who post here would convince them we’re only out to have a weekend of fun, games and music!

So what do we name our little picnic? DopeStock? Just kiddin’!

Barring any scheduling conflicts (I know July 10 is out for us at the moment), we’re in.

I think I can make another drive out…SURE!

We’ll be out of town the last week in June/first part of July and July 17-25. (It’s our year to travel.) Other than that, we’re free!

Sauron and I might be able to do it. It just depends on which weekend you guys pick and his visitation schedule with his kids.

I’ll keep an eye out for any updates and see if we can make it.

I have spoekn to one of the RN’s at the hospital I work at, and she’s tentatively agreed to let us use her lakeside property as a picnic site.

One thing I need to know however, is how many of y’all are willing to tavel to Paulding County. It’s about an hour’s drive from downtown Atlanta.

Please let me know.

Thanks

Q

Robert & I could do it. We just might get a few more folks to come if it were held a little more centrally though, I guess.

Though I haven’t given muchthought yet to where a good location for a picnic would be.

Well, another alternative would be Lake Allatoona. I believe they have picnic sites where one could bring coolers. I do not know if it is considered a state park facility, so I don’t know how they feel about alcohol (i.e. beer) being consumed there.

I do know there are cabins that can be rented there, if y’all wanna share the cost of one for a day/evening…

If y’all want to have it closer to Atlanta, then I would have to step out of the picture as an organizer, because outside of my Paulding County acquaintances, I don’t know of anyone who owns land upon which we could have a picninc/“hootenanny”.

Put your thinking caps on and let’s see what we can come up with.

Q

An hour north of Atlanta? Or south? And what is cameraderie, is it scary? Put me down for a maybe.

Depending on work scheduling and transporation, I am reasonably sure I can come. I hope so- I’ve had to cancel out of the last few and I desparately miss being around fellow Dopers.

Here’s a link to some Pauldinf County info…http://roadsidegeorgia.com/county/paulding.html

Zette, if I make it out there and you go too I know EXACTLY what I’m wearing!!!

I could bring a couple Dopers up from Florida. (It’s a small car)

Pencil me and my brother in as a “maybe”. 08/12 - 08/22 are out, but another weekend (with ~2 weeks notice) would not be a problem.

Yup, any weekend with two weeks notice works for me too!

It will be great to see you again, torie, but you’ll need to wear a headscarf to match your t-shirt, so that I will know it’s really you, okay?

As an update, I am working on getting closer to metro-Atlanta. Allatoona being one option and Lake Lanier being another.

It would help a lot if I could get an idea of the logistics of this next little get-together. For instance, do y’all wanna bring kids? If so, we will need to have it where the little ones will not be bored. Do y’all wanna bring coolers so that we can have beers, etc.? How about entertainment? I understand Michael Jackson’s realy cheap right now… (Sorry! )

How far do y’all wanna travel? For me, as long as it is within the Southeast, I’m fine, but it might not be fine for everyone. I used “Southeast” in the title of the thread because I know we have some folks in the Carolinas, Florida, Alabama, etc. who may or may not be able to make it depending on distance.

Optimal location would be someone’s land that’s not to hard to get to or out of and who wouldn’t mind us being there as long as we cleaned up afterward, and that is what I am working toward, but, as I said, I can’t guarantee such a place so we may have to pay a small fee if we have it at a park.

Also, what if some of us need to spend the night? Y’all prepared to do that if I can find a decent deal? We might could picnic during the day, then retire to the motel at night. Or we could just do a day-time type of thing and let everyone who attends worrry about their own accomodations.

It might be best to set date first, and we’ve discussed “late August”. I’m gonna say the 28th. Anyone want to vote for another one? After we get a date settled we’ll go for location and then we’ll try to “lock in” the attendees, if that’s okay with everyone.

Let’s talk. We have a little time to prepare and this could be really nice, but it may take the efforts of more than just a couple of us to make it a success.

Q

I don’t have any young’uns, that I know of.

Give me enough beer and watching the grass grow is enough entertainment.

I’m cool with anything under 3 hours.

I’m easy here. Whatever is easy enough for everybody else.

Again, I’m easy. Easy like Sunday morning.

. Holy timing, Quas, that’s my birthday!

Lemme know what I can do.

Paying a small fee is not a problem and the 28th sounds good.

Let me know what I can do.

Bruce_Daddy, send me an email. Maybe we can see about riding into Atlanta together. We live so close and that drive all by yourself gets lonely. :frowning:

Quasi, I have to buy more headscarfs then.
Let me know what I can maybe do.
