A South-East Doper Picnic!

Okay, so the 28th is a go, then, yes?

Event assignments as follows (subject to change, of course, if the person named doesn’t wanna do it! :D)

Quasi : In charge of finding picnic place and paying fees (if any). Also in charge of making sure that we leave it like we find it. (Knowing y’all, that will be the easiest part of my job!)

Torie: Food and beverage organizer. (This might be an assignment which may require some assistance from other Dopers)

Archergal (with Robert): Event hosts. In charge of hugs handshakes and introductions. Archergal may also be asked to serve on entertainment commitee along with a certain hump-backed bell ringer, if she so desires.

Bruce Daddy: Assists Torie with the food and beverages and allgemeiner (all around) right hand man and trouble shooter if the need arises.

We also need a group photographer. Hell, the more the merrier, Bring your digies!

I will get on the ball this next week with finding us a place and getting definite details, and I will post choices as soon as possible. We have more than 2 months to work on this, so if I have left anything out in the details, please don’t hesitate to let me know, okay?

If stuff like badminton, volleyball or frisbee tossing is important, then I need to know that before I “book” the place, okay?

Lastly, what are we gonna name this? How about PeachDope4?

Q

So I am in charge of getting everyone to tell me what they are bringing? Or I bring stuff?

Either one or just the first. (How’s that for a Kirk-like answer?)

JK

Really just the first, torie. So we don’t have duplicates of peach cobbler, ya know? (although I personally see nothing wrong with duplicating peach cobbler and ice cream ad infinitum!)

Quasi Tiberius Craig

I hate to be that guy but that really is my birthday and as much as I love you guys, um, I might have other stuff going on. Is Sep 4 too late?

Now, you see, 9/4 would be much better for me too. I’m outta town 08/12 - 08/22, so leaving again on 08/28 seems a bit much. Discuss.

This would be my first SDMB hoe-down/hootenanie so I’m eager to meet some of you guys. I’m about 30 minutes north of West Palm Beach, FL so the drive to ATL (or close to it) would be significant. Basically as long as I have a decent notice, I should be able to make a weekend out of it. I vote for staying overnight. I have no kids (i’m a youngin at 23) and will bring my share of alcohol if that is going to be the theme of the get-together.

Check me down as “maybe” for now.

woohoo!! A Dopefest I might actually be able to attend!

August 28th is better. Sept 4 is Labor Day weekend, and lots of folks may have other plans (plus the parks will be JAM PACKED)

Allatoona is my vote. torie, once we get the particulars worked out, I’ll be glad to bring stuff.

Looking forward to this!

Do you have plans for the whole weekend? I second the thought that Labor Day weekend might not be such a good idea, but how about Sunday the 29th? Since it’s a picnic rather than bar-type carousing, there’s really no reason it has to be on a Saturday.

Sweet, I have family and friends in NE Ga I can visit whatever weekend you all decide to do this, so I can drive on down from there.

Well, no it doesn’t have to be a Saturday, and if y’all would rather have it on a Sunday, then that’s fine.

How about you folks coming in from out of town? Do you want me to check on accomodations for you?

I am checking on Red Top Mountain State Park in Cartersville. They have picnic or group shelters at a very nominal fee.

Look for updates here.

Thanks

Quasi

Quasi’s throwin’ a Pasture Party? Cool! But Dude, if you get into September, Auburn and other lesser institutions will be playin’ football.

Have it near Macon, and Saturday night those that are so inclined can go to Whiskey River, which is the best dance hall in Georgia.

Or have it where/when you choose, and I’ll show up if I can. Should I bring Wild Turkey, Crown Royal, home-made corn squeezin’, or some of each? Catfish to fry, deer sausage, or perhaps oysters from Mobile bay?

Just lemme’ know! I’ve ducked out on so many Bamadopes at the last minute that duckin’ out on one for the whole Southeast won’t phase me a bit.

That’s true, I didn’t think about that. I forgot/didn’t know when Labor Day was.

Who am I kidding, I sat on my ass for my last birthday, let’s get it on.

Come on Bambi, live a little!

W00t! We can handle that role. I’ve got hugs for anybody who’s comfortable hugging! Robert’s normally off on Saturday but works on Sunday, so he can only share hosting duties one day of the week.

I’ll pull out my melody instruments and start practicing.

(BTW, I don’t think Georgia state parks permit alcohol, so keep that in mind.)

(Sorry for the late response, but I’m working now for a while, and we can’t read non-work email or message boards at work. WAAAAAAAAHHHHH!)

Hey John, you know I’m pretty flexible, but I thought having it closer to me would allow me to get things ready, look the place over, and do other housekeeping stuff as needed. Still, I hope you can make it. It’s a Southeast Dopefest so anyone else you wanna bring from your neck of the woods is heartily welcome.

Archergal, I think I knew that about State Parks (no alcohol), but on the Red Top website there’s something about only beer and wine is sold in their lodge, so let me do a little more checking.

Quasi

Wow, so many folks from the southeast on this board . . .

I’m new here, I don’t know any of you yet, but it would still be fun to meet you.

Count me in, if I’m eligible. Any weekend is good. I have relatives in Atlanta, it would be convenient to visit them while up there.

I’m in Panama City Beach, Florida. Anybody like fresh fish, shrimp, and oysters?

PCB! My old stomping grounds. (used to be the assistant manager of the Sherwin-Williams store in PC back in the late 80’s…)

Looks like you’re the third Floridian that’s expressed an interest. Y’all wanna just carpool up here?

And if you’re bringing shrimp and/or oysters, you don’t have to worry about beer. I’m buyin’!

Regarding brewskies and consumption of same. I just spoke with a Deputy friend of mine and he tells me that as long as we keep it in coolers and coozies and don’t start a fight we’ll be cool, but I will leave that up to everyone individually.

Also, if some of y’all are coming in Saturday night the 28th, let me know, so that we can get together in someone’s room and/or go out and get something to eat. We have a new Sports and Trivia bar here in Paulding County that serves some really great wings.

Accoustic guitars, tambourines, fiddles etc. are also welcome. Please? I have been to two Doper meets and have wanted to do some pickin’, but we haven’t managed it yet.

I’ll know something definite about Red Top or Allatoona parks this time tomorrow.

Thanks

Q

Alright! When Y’all are ready, email me what you are bringing.
OH, and I agree with Quasi, multiply all the cobbler you want!

Hey Y’all!

This morning I reserved for us a picnic shelter for August 29th at Red Top Mountain in Cartersville Georgia. The cost is 40 bucks for all day and we are in shelter number 7. This shelter is located at the edge of an island on Lake Allatoona and is “away from everything” so we can have our own private place.

Here is a link to a picture of what a shelter will look like, but it is not our shelter, okay? The guy who rented us the shelter says it is their best one, however, so I hope that will be okay.

http://gastateparks.org/page.asp?itemid=8054&wrapid=1

For a map of how to find our shelter once you get to Red Top, please go here,

http://gastateparks.org/info/redtop/

and click on Park Map.

Would one of the Georgia Dopers volunteer to provide mapping info for our out-of-state friends, please? Or, if y’all want to, just do a MapQuest. As we get closer to time, I will post my home and cell numbers for any last minute questions and stuff.

Also, if anyone’s coming in Saturday, please let me know so that I will know to make myself available if y’all wanna do something Saturday night

I hope the 40 bucks is okay, and don’t worry if things go awry. I can cancel up to three days prior to the event and not be out any money. But let’s hope everyone can make it and let’s have us a true Southern Hootenanny/Cookout/Picnic!

Quasi

::sigh:: This is what mapsonus said about Lakeland, FL to Atlanta, GA:
454.4 miles, 9 hours 7 min, 16 turns (Fastest Route)

I really don’t know if I could convince Mr. Trouble to go that far for a meeting with “internet people”, as much as he’s enjoyed the two he’s gone to. So as much as I’d like to see Bear and Bambi again, and as much as I really want to meet you, Quasi, I can’t commit right now.

:frowning:

I understand, Trouble! It was sweet of you to write and it’s sweet of you to want to be there, but I’m sure I speak for all of us when I say we understand. That is a long way.

Maybe sometime some of you Florida Dopers will have a meet that we can attend.

BTW, I am still using your beautiful black and white water photograph as wallpaper!
