ANY New Tee-Vee Shows You're Planning to Watch?

I visited my Mom this weekend and was paging through her Fall Preview TV Guide—how I used to look forward to that, as a wee tot! And how my hopes sunk and my eyes drooped as I looked through this one! Not one show I’m looking forward to, or will cross the street to catch. I’ll give In-Laws a chance, because I like Jean Smart and whatshisname, but if the writing’s not good, the cast can’t save it. And judging by the promos . . .

Are there any new shows this season that have you on the edge of your seat, eagerly testing your remote to see if the battery’s fresh?

Nothing new looks good (and that’s saying something for me … there’s a new Suzanne Pleshette show!).

However, I am toying with the idea of starting in on Six Feet Under if HBO decides to give us a catch-up marathon. That’s how I got hooked on The Sopranos.

From the first episode of Life with Bonnie I have to say I think it has potential. The family stuff could improve with time (they should lose the housekeeper), but the talk show stuff was hilarious. There was an out-of-control cooking segment with two Italian chefs and Bonnie Hunt bouncing off each other and cracking wise that made me laugh out loud, a rare sit-com occurence for me.

Sadly, this is really the only new show that holds much interest for me this season.

Firefly. Joss Whedon is one of the top writers in TV today. The pilot was actually pretty good, and avoided the trap of laying on the exposition with a trowel (except for the opening narration, which I suspect Fox insisted on).

I’ll also give CSI: Miami a shot, mostly because 1) it’s on Monday nights, when there’s nothing else worth watching and 2) CSI has self-contained episodes, so if you miss one, you don’t have to catch up.

The comedies aren’t worth my time (but then, judging by the Emmy nominees, comedies are in a pretty pathetic state – “Sex and the City” was the only nominee I’d bother to watch again).

Firefly is pretty much all I’m doing. I was sort of interested in the new Twilight Zone, but I’ve heard nothing good about it. Since I’ve got no desire to watch shows about cops, doctors, or lawyers, this is yet another season of nothing for me.

Boomtown. The missing persons show with Anthony Lapaglia. The Tom Sizemore cop show.

Having finally given up on ER midway through last season, I’m lacking a doctor show – but both of the new ones look just freakin’ horrendous.

I’ll give NBC’s Boomtown a whirl. Everything else just makes the idea of watching Friends seem tolerable. Well, maybe not that bad, but you get the point.

I’m planning on watching Firefly. I always loved the Space Cowboy genre ever since I first played Privateer back in 98. Looks good so far and I love the moody music and atmosphere. Great cast as well, Julie Stait used to be on serveral shows on the Disney Channel and did very well in those rolls.

I have a few caviots with the show, but I’ll save those for a diffrent post. I’m also interested in seeing the premire of Adventure, Inc. Look to have promiss.

Less Than Perfect has gotten fairly good advance word . . . Stars Sara Rue, who played Carmen (“the world’s thinnest fat girl”) on the late, lamented and inaccurately named Popular.

I haven’t followed the new shows much but maybe I will try the new 60’s show ,whatever it’s called. I hope it’s not going to be a load of cliches, though. And based on this thread I will give Firefly a shot.

Actually most of my limited TV time will probably be spent on watcing anime on video. In particular I am looking forward to the well-known anime sitcom Maison Ikkoku. It has 96 half-hour episodes so it should last a long time…

I’ll be out of the country when most of the series premieres emerge, but the only one I’ll be taping is Boomtown (and maybe Birds of Prey since my wife loved Charlie’s Angels).

I saw Life with Bonnie, and the show-within-a-show was funny, loose, and high-energy, while the rest was familiar family-comedy stuff (cute kid, crotchety maid, semi-dim hubby). I’ll see if it hits its stride soon.

Too many cop shows to keep track of, but I like David Caruso, Tom Sizemore, and Anthony LaPaglia, so I may watch an episode or two of their shows at some point (maybe). We’ll see.

I’ve alaready seen episodes of Twilight Zone & Push, Nevada and don’t expect to be returning anytime soon, unless I hear that things have improved. I like Sci-Fi but my wife doesn’t so I’m not sure if I’ll ever get to squeeze in Firefly.

No doubt by November, I’ll be a regular of one, but probably no more than that.

I’ll try Birds of Prey because I like the comic and I’m curious to see what they do with it.

Life with Bonnie was good in the first episode, so I’ll try it again.

Push Nevada is a maybe. I saw the premiere and while the visuals are pretty impressive, the story seemed too melodramatic.

John Doe. Hopefully it won’t fall victim to the “Friday Night on FOX” curse.

RealityChuck, Legomancer - That ep of “Firefly” wasn’t the pilot. Joss had written a 2-hour pilot, but that was quashed by Fox. He and Tim Minnear wrote “The Train Job” in one weekend.

Boomtown, yes.
Without a Trace will be TiVoed solely because of the power of the beautiful Anthony LaPaglia

That’s all. I have no use for any of the new comedies, though I’ll probably watch The In-Laws and Good Morning Miami until they get too stupid to stand because they’re in the middle of blocks of shows I will watch.

I’ve no use for anything new on Fox, ABC, UPN, WB or otherwise. I’m a creature of TV habit.

I’ll check out Haunted, and probably Boomtown. ::Might:: look at Birds of Prey. Tried the new Twilight Zone, but left unimpressed. Same with Firefly.

Other than that, nada.

Without a Trace because of the power of the beautiful Anthony LaPaglia [sup]TM[/sup]tlw.

MD’s because of the power of the beautiful John Hannah.

Possibly Boomtown because of the power of a lot of good critical buzz.

I haven’t watched a sitcom regularly since the last century, and it looks like the trend will continue.

Firefly is the only one I’m going to make an effort to watch. And I’ll probably stay tuned for John Doe for a little while, at least. Maybe check out Birds of Prey, since the buzz on that has been optimistic, if not exactly ecstatic. Other than that… there’s not much out there that looks good.

I will probably watch more than my share of 8 Simple Rules, simply because W. Bruce Cameron, on whose book the series is based, belongs to the same internet humorist group I do, and it was a large deal when he sold his book, did his tour, and got an offer for the pilot.

I was a little disappointed with the premiere, but I could see it becoming a little better, with time and the proper writing. I’ve always enjoyed John Ritter, too, when he doesn’t try too hard. I was actually impressed with his understated performance in Slingblade.

Other than that, I will probably spend evenings either online or with a classic videotape.

HBO’s been running repeats of the first season all summer, and just started repeats of the second season. It’s on Sundays at 8:00.

As for the new shows, I watched Firefly, and might watch it again. It was okay.
Boomtown and Without a Trace look good.

I’ve been watching Monk on Friday nights on USA, and am definitely hooked on that one.

None of the new comedies looked very interesting to me.
I’m looking forward to the new seasons of *24, ER, Scrubs * and CSI.
