After years of postponing and dithering, I finally got my butt in gear this year and applied to grad school. Looooong story short, my wife, her son and I will be packing up this fall and moving from the west to lovely Hanover, NH, where I will start a PhD program in Molecular and Cell Biology.
I was just wondering if there were any people here who could offer any advice or pointers about the area. Our biggest worry at the moment is finding a house. We know we want to buy because we’re sick of wasting money on rent, but the area doesn’t seem to have much cheap housing.
Other than that, we’re just excited to be moving and making progress in life! So greetings, area Dopers! And here we come!!
No, not at all. It might be cheaper to look for housing on the VT side of the river and commute over (Hanover’s about ~10 minutes from White River Junction,) but I’m still not positive VT houses are cheaper. But I’m 99% sure that VT property taxes are lower, since we DO have income tax, unlike NH.
You can find relatively cheap housing but it will be at a distance from Hanover. In summer that might not be a problem, but it winter it’s going to get interesting. You’ll be wanting to buy snow tires.
My wife’s from Brattleboro, in the SE corner of Vermont. A lovely area and lots to do. A friend of her family often commuted to work at a hospital in the Dartmouth area. Hope your move goes well!
