Any songs on your iPod which would invoke contempt and mockery from your friends?

My friends and I are a bunch of self-described music snobs.

If they knew I had the following artists on my iPod I would be laughed at and derided for an extended period of time:

AC/DC
Billy Idol
Blink 182
Falco
Goo Goo Dolls
Prince
Tears For Fears
Zamfir

How about you? Is there anything on your iPod that would invoke the contempt of your friends?

“Barbie Girl” - Aqua

Need I say more?

Not iPod but my MP3 player:

Various Schoolhouse Rock songs (both original and from the tribute album)
Showtunes (I am SO gay…)
Music from World of Warcraft

Punch & Pie

Ouch

N*Sync and Ace of Base

This conversation never took place

Air Supply - Making Love Out of Nothing at All

Depends on the friends. Some of mine would mock the growly-voiced death/black/heavy metal I have on it, like Lamb of God. Others, probably Scissor Sisters’ remake of “Comfortably Numb,” or Cobra Starship’s “Bring It (Snakes on a Plane),” the song with video that plays over the film’s closing credits.

What kind of friends do you have who would laugh at you having rock music (e.g. AC/DC or Billy Idol) on your iPod?

Hmmm… I’d answer, but I don’t really want to invoke the contempt and mockery of dopers.

:frowning:

OOOOOOOOOOOOoooooooooooooooooooohhhhhhhhhhhhh…Stinger.

music-snobby friends

That’s OK, I have a friend who tried to tell me that KISS was more influential than The Beatles.

I laughed so long, I almost died from malnutrition.

Wannabe. Yes, by the Spice Girls

Although I’ve considered mmmBop, I’ve resisted it to date.

And what’s wrong with Prince?

Fergilicious, and several Christina Aguilera songs which would probably get mocked just because she gets lumped with Britney and Jessica, but damnit the girl can actually sing.

They don’t like Prince.

Music Snobs, you see. If it’s not what they like then it must, by definition, be crap.

For me, there is:

Music that I like and, therefore, respect (like The Beatles)

Music that I don’t like but still respect (like Jazz),

And music that I don’t like and don’t respect (like Paris Hilton. Don’t pass ‘GO’, don’t collect $200)

I guess it would be some of these:

Various Commodore 64 game songs
“Shiny Shiny” by Hayzee Fantayzee
Most of the first Wham! album, Fantastic
The Carpenters’ Greatest Hits

I still stand behind the integrity of these songs, but the inadvertent cheese that comes with it makes it difficult…

I certainly have some stuff on my iPod that would raise, erm, questions from some of my friends:

Bette Midler - “The Divine Miss M” (the entire album)

Broadway Musical Soundtracks such as:

  • Les Miserables,10th Anniv. Cast Recording
  • The original Les Miserables “Concept Album” (in French)
  • The Phantom of the Opera, original cast recording
  • The Little Shop of Horrors, original cast recording
  • Jesus Christ Superstar
(Side ref. to a recent thread on “surprise gym workout songs from iPod shuffle”:
“Heaven On Their Minds”, as sung by Judas, is a terrific song for running to.)
  • Evita

Not one but both of the Soundtrack CDs for “Moulin Rouge!”

Kylie Minogue songs
Cyndi Lauper, “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun”
Kelly Clarkson’s “Since U Been Gone”

While I have not gotten any comments yet I don’t fear any. I am well secure in my manliness, since I work out at the gym all the time, which I get to by riding my Vespa motor scooter.

I will also note that I recently deleted Aqua’s “Barbie Girl” song from my iPod, as well as the “Ace of Base” songs that somehow got onto there.

Hm.

“Wannabe” by the Spice Girls. Definitely.

Where to start? Depending on which of my friends gets ahold of my work mix on my iPod, any of these:

“Black Velvet” - Alannah Myles (I’ve never done karaoke but if I ever do, this is SO my song.)
“The Trinity” - Sean Paul
“Damn, I Wish I Was Your Lover” - Sophie B. Hawkins
“Son of a Preacher Man” - Melissa Etheridge
“Barrier Reef” - Old 97s
“Bches Ain’t St” by Dr. Dre as covered by Ben Folds Five. I’m really not a gangsta rap kind of girl and I think the lyrics are terrible but the cover is too funny.

(Am I allowed to say bches and st in CS?)
