Just started watching this show last night. I thought it was pretty good. And I must admit, some of the crap that comes out of their mouths cracks me the hell up.
Anyway, the show I watched last night was the one where Spartacus takes on the head gladiator guy and gets his ass handed to him.
My question is how many shows have I missed so far and is there a way for me to watch them?
That’s the third and latest episode, so you haven’t missed much. Looks like you can catch the other episodes here.
I like it a fair amount. I like the visual style, partly because it looks great on my new HDTV, and the “no holds barred” presentation of ancient Roman life. The blood is a bit much some times, in a ridiculous not gross way, but it’s part of the style. I liken it Deadwood in being both historically gritty and interestingly dramatic, though not as good. I’ve got the DVR set.
I’ve been watching it and trying to give it a fair shake, because I love shows like this (“Rome,” for instance). And while this one does take a different “tack” I’ve been pretty OK with it. However,
This is what I have been trying to get my head around, and I’m afraid it is going to result in me being unable to continue wanting to see it. Not blood spraying around, I’m OK with that, but
the scene where Spartacus gets hit in the back of the head in the arena kicked me right out of any suspension of disbelief. There was too much blood flying to come from the back of someone’s head without tearing part of the skull away. In fact, I think there HAS to be brains in that splatter, I just don’t think there is that much blood in a human head.
So, our hero is dead. That blow had to have killed him. But no, he gets up and keeps on fighting! WTF?? Must be Zombie Spartacus.
Hmmm. Come to think of it, referring to my last sentence in the spoiler…this may actually be a GOOD thing…
I know exactly the shot you’re talking about and I thought pretty much the same thing. It was a particularly egregious overuse of blood, but it did look cool and I don’t remember anything quite that bad since, so I’m letting it slide as part of the visual style for now. Really, most on-screen fights aren’t nearly as deadly as reality anyway, like sword slashes that manage to cut the skin but never sever muscles or break bones unless they take a limb off; I’m just counting the blood as part of the dramatic license on-screen fights get anyway.
I like this show well enough. It’s mindless entertainment with a ton of boobs, so I’m ok with that.
Spartacus himself pisses me off though. He’s way to arrogant for how much he sucks. I’m ok with the main character being cocky as long as he can back it up, and so far he hasn’t been able to. Hopefully with last weeks ass kicking he’ll show some humility and begin his rise to the top.
I think Spartacus will get his feet under himself soon, as RandMcnally mentioned.
One thing I do like about this is that it is a journey. Unlike the old Spartacus movie, this Spartacus doesn’t start out being invincible and always knowing just what to do.
In spite of my joking around (and one serious doubt), I am rather liking how the series is progressing.
Oh come on, the guy took out four gladiators by himself, why would he think Crixus was any better than the others? I’d be feeling pretty cocky myself in that situation. Besides he was a real warrior before that, I’m sure there was already a feeling of superiority over “sport” fighting.
Crixus beat his ass in the second episode and nearly won again during the test to become a gladiator. And he fucked up and killed a guy by throwing the sword. Yes, the four guys was impressive but as the tall black guy said (was he in 300?), those weren’t actual gladiators, but executioners.
We like this show, but I have to admit, they are pretty buff gladiators - not quite sure six-pack abs were popular back then, but who knows.
Plus the women seem to be rather advanced in terms of hair and makeup - maybe they order online from Helvina Rubbing Stein?
