I tried a quick reply and got the warning window that I was not logged in, but I was. When I tried going back, my message had disappeared into electronic oblivion.

On a more serious note, you might have some sort of cookie problem. Do you have anything on your system that might be clearing cookies periodically?

Hehe I did clear my cache earlier today. I’m still getting bumped off when I switch forums. Maybe after a cold boot everything will be back to mornal.
I got logged out yesterday for no apparent reason but since then everything’s been fine.

I got logged out, and for some reason the automatic login didn’t work on my iPad. I had forgotten my password and the one I had written down was an old one. Since I can’t receive emails from the Straight Dope because they’re blacklisted by my ISP I had to google how to find the password in my keychain so I could get back in. I hope this sort of thing doesn’t keep happening.
I emailed the webmaster to tell him about the blacklist, but I have no idea if anything will be done about it. I haven’t received an email from the Straight Dope for several years.
We require you to keep a valid e-mail address that we can actually reach in case we ever do need to contact you for some reason or if you ever get locked out of your account and need to reset it. You can use something like gmail or yahoo or outlook or whatever if you want. We don’t care if it’s your primary e-mail or not. All we ask is that you check it every once in a while.
is HTTPS disabled? I got logged off for the first time in a couple years and now I get unsecure warnings.
We have never used https here.
The latest versions of Firefox and Chrome now give a security alert just because we have a login box on the page and don’t use https. Nothing has changed here and we’re no less secure than we’ve always been.
The email address is valid. I get email from all sorts of places, including lots of spam. The Straight Dope apparently sent out viruses with its emails, so it’s the Straight Dope that screwed up. If they can’t stay off blacklists I really don’t see that as being my problem, but I will change my account to my gmail address.
