Anybody see Bruce Almighty?

I have an obvious interest

I have read rave and trashing reviews but I trust Dopers over those guys. Should I spend $5.50 on this one?

I’m going to see it tonight. If I remember, I’ll post about it tomorrow.

I saw it, good movie. It’s very much like Liar, Liar.

Struck me as a pale version of Groundhog Day. There are some very funny moments, but the story arc is rather anemic. Jim Carrey’s scenes with Morgan Freeman were well done and nobody does manic comedy as well as Carrey. It’s worth watching, although the conclusion is perfunctory.

Well, it’s received a rotten rating from RottenTomatoes.com

Saw it - it was a lot like Liar Liar, as skater mentioned, except it started dragging at the end, and the obvious point was pounded a little too hard, with a little too much “god/prayer/salvation” in it for my taste. . .

Still, Carey is Carey, and the first 2/3rds of the movie are a stitch.

I’d recommend seeing a matinee -

What Murcielago said. We enjoyed it but it’s nothing to write home about.
Minor spoiler: When he kept doing nice things for people on the street but was so “self centered” that he never cared about his girlfriend, I had a hard time getting into the character. It seemed that he was being set up for the rather bland ending.

I need to know- do we see Jennifer Aniston topless? Naw, didn’t think so.

I read something (I believe it was a review from MSN) that said something like “It’s good for the half hour where he realizes he has the powers, but before he realizes he has responsibilities.” I saw it and think that’s pretty accurate. The half-hour before that and half-hour after that kinda suck. Whiny and preachy, respectively.

It was ok. Jim Carey was a little too much like Jim Carey, but Morgan Freeman was good.

It attempted to have the moral lessons of Groundhog day and the irrelevant theological humor of Dogma, and failed on both counts. Still, not a terrible movie.

See it if you want some mindless fun and you’ve seen everything else.

It was very good. Just one step closer to Carrey returning to his old “Dumb and Dumber”/ “Ace Ventura” days!

A slight hijack. What do you guys think of “Cable Guy”? I did a full 180 on it. At first I hated it, I mean I absolutely loathed it. But now I love it. Personally I don’t think it gets enough respect.

The cast was brilliant too. Carrey, Broderick, Owen Wilson, Jack Black. Solid gold.

I’m with you on Cable Guy. It might be one of those movies that becomes better appreciated over time. I agree that most people didn’t give it much of a chance or really get it.

I thought BA was hilarious!!! I was in the mood for a goofy comedy and it didn’t disappoint. Some very funny bits, Morgan Freeman being his cool self and Jennifer Aniston being cute and sweet. What’s not to like? Don’t analyze it, just go with the flow.

Jack Black’s in Cable Guy?…might have to go rent that.

Saw it, loved it, and I normally despise Jim Carrey.

At first, I didn’t really get the humor. But then, after it was repeated numerous times on cable (how ironic), I began to enjoy it. It has that sly humor found in Ben Stiller-written material and is quite amusing. I also think Jim Carrey was well cast and did an excellent job, especially with the little nuances of the character (such as the lisp and his swaying-walking style). I like it, although the Medieval Times scene is a bit gratitutous (although, any excuse to see Janene Garafalo is fine by me…)

Everybody else in the thread pretty much nailed it. Not a complete waste of my 5 bucks–it did have some funny stuff in it–but also not a very good movie. The ending was extraordinarily preachy. I felt like I sat through a week of Bible camp.

Unfortunately, even though Jennifer Anniston’s boobies had a large role in the movie, they stayed covered. I weep.

Worse yet, I found out in the trailers that Jennifer Connelly is in the Hulk and now I must see that movie even though it looks awful. Damn my stalker-esque obsession…

Same feelings on Cable Guy. I thought it was -eh- at first, but I’ve loved it for awhile now. It helps that I have a friend who JUST DOESN’T KNOW WHEN TO LEAVE and when he can tell I’m near my wit’s end he starts quoting The Cable Guy: “Come on, eat your eggs, they’re gonna get cold”, “The pathword ith: forethkin.”

Bruce Almighty? It’s Guud! Not great by any means but a great way to waste a lazy afternoon. I tried to ignore the message and the plot because they’re both foregone conclusions. If you walk in with that attitude it has some damn funny parts and you’ll most likely be glad you checked it out.

I saw it. It was alright, I thought the ‘serious’ ending sort of blew. I like my Carey movies wacky and crazy 'til the credits are over.

I will say it was funny when Morgan Freeman said one of Carey’s signature lines at the end. Also the ‘wine’ thing was funny.

I hear you slortar, I will be sitting in the theater to watch “the Hulk” even though I’m pretty sure it will stink.

There is no hope for me…

I’m with SnoopyFan. I can’t stand Jim Carrey, as I find his “let’s do funny faces yet again” schtick tiresome. But I thought this movie was freaking hilarious.

Bonus: I only paid $4.50 for a twilight show.
